World: The Vatican’s Jewish persecution comparison didn’t go over well

  • “This is really in bad taste.” On the list of least likely things you would’ve expected to come from the Vatican, a comparison of an abuse scandal and cover-up to Jewish persecution is pretty high. And a bunch of Jews aren’t happy about it, either. A Vatican spokesperson finally did some damage control, saying the line “is absolutely not the line of the Vatican and of the Catholic Church,” but the damage has already been done. source

World: Sound familiar? Ireland’s Catholic Church rocked by a sex-abuse scandal

  • Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone • Discussing sexual-abuse scandals that have rocked the Catholic Church of Ireland. A November report noted that the church “obsessively” hid child abuse between the years of 1975 and 2004. Four bishops have already resigned as a result of the scandal, where at least one priest admitted to abusing as many as 100 children. Yikes. source

U.S.: A departing New York cardinal spices up the priestly celibacy debate

  • Hey, priests should have laaaaaaadies, too! Amid all the hullabaloo around the retirement of Edward M. Egan, some spare comments he made about allowing priests to marry has relit the flame to a long-standing debate in the Catholic Church. Egan told an Albany radio station regarding celibacy, “I think that it’s going to be discussed; it’s a perfectly legitimate discussion.” Allowing marriage might help reverse the shortage of priests that’s been dogging parishes lately. This may not happen, though. The Church doesn’t back down very easily. source
