Politics: Woman wants priest removed after refusal of communion at mother’s funeral

  • then Father Marcel Guarnizo was officiating at a funeral mass for Loetta Johnson. After saying only people in a “state of grace” could receive communion, he refused to allow Loetta’s daughter, Barbara, to drink from the communion chalice. The reason? She’s a lesbian, and lives with her partner — a sin, by the Catholic Church’s standards.
  • nowBarbara Johnson is calling for the priest’s removal. The archdiocese has said questions of whether communion ought to be rendered should be addressed privately, not by “public reprimand” like Guarnizo did. They have refused, however, to comment on his ongoing status in the priesthood, claiming it’s a personnel issue. sour.ce

Culture: Vatican not familiar with The Simpsons’ recent decline in quality

  • Few people know it, and he does everything he can to hide it, but it is true: Homer J Simpson is a Catholic.
  • An article in the Vatican’s official newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano • Making the claim that Homer J. Simpson is a Catholic whether he likes it or not. The article bases its analysis on a 2005 episode of the show where Homer and Bart convert to Catholicism at the suggestion of a priest played by Liam Neeson. Yeah, you read that right. A 2005 episode. Which means that it’s not canon and you don’t need to care about this analysis. source

World: The Legion of Christ says sorry for their scandal-ridden past

  • We ask all those who accused him in the past to forgive us, those whom we did not believe or were incapable of giving a hearing to, since at the time we could not imagine that such behavior took place.
  • A statement from the Legion of Christ • Regarding the major sex abuse scandals that happened on their watch over the last 60 years. It’s a heavy apology for the conservative sect of Catholicism – their leader for many years, Father Marcial Maciel, reportedly (on top of child molestation allegations) lived a double life which included mistresses and children. “We accept that, given the gravity of his faults, we cannot take his person as a model of Christian or priestly life.” No kidding. source

U.S.: Jesus wouldn’t approve: A cardinal deposed in abuse scandal

U.S.: For Patrick Kennedy, no shirts, no pro-life stance, no service

  • The bishop instructed me not to take Communion and said that he has instructed the diocesan priests not to give me Communion.
  • Patrick Kennedy • Regarding the crappy service he got recently when he tried to get communion recently. Providence Bishop Thomas J. Tobin said that Ted Kennedy’s kid, a Rhode Island representative, wasn’t worthy of communion because he was pro-choice. And he told all of his pastors to do the same, Kennedy says. Tobin’s rep has no comment on the denying-Pat-communion part of this debate, but denies the pastor-telling part. source
