World: Pope Benedict wishes for end to violence in Syria in Christmas message

  • May the Lord come to the aid of our world torn by so many conflicts which even today stain the earth with blood. May the Prince of Peace grant peace and stability to that Land where he chose to come into the world, and encourage the resumption of dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians. May he bring an end to the violence in Syria, where so much blood has already been shed.
  • Pope Benedict • Speaking during a Christmas service at St Peter’s Basilica Sunday. It’s of particular note that the Pope, who offered greetings in 65 different languages, chose to single out Syria, where a violent crackdown has led to at least 5,000 deaths in the past nine months. The day before, the pope made a point of decrying the commercialization of the holiday in his Christmas Eve message. source

World: Easter Sunday: Pope Benedict pleas for peace in Libya

  • In the current conflict in Libya, may diplomacy and dialogue replace arms, and may those who suffer as a result of the conflict be given access to humanitarian aid.
  • Pope Benedict XVI • Making a plea for peace in Libya, which has suffered greatly from heavy fighting in recent weeks. He expressed hope that “every political choice is inspired by respect for the human person.” He also made a plea for countries to consider the plight of the refugee, suggesting that “people of good will open their hearts to welcome them.” On this Easter Sunday, Mr. Crazy Hat nailed it, in our opinion. source

World: It’s a beatification: John Paul II getting saintly honor at Easter

  • It’s official: We’re looking to make John Paul II a saint. With Pope Benedict claiming that he’s met the requirements of beatification, his predecessor will be honored at Easter. The uber-popular John Paul II reportedly was responsible for a miracle – he cured a nun of Parkinson’s disease shortly after he died. He needs another one to become a full saint. And, in case you’re wondering: This is waaaaay faster than it usually happens. (photo by bren) source

  • yeah … Pope Benedict made some claims in a to-be-released book that make it sound like the Catholic Church’s stance on condoms is softening.

World: Noted human sexuality expert Pope Benedict talks about condoms

  • yes … Pope Benedict says that condoms are OK to use in certain cases to prevent the stop of AIDS – you know, like prostitution.
  • … but But, while he gives that much, he claims that condoms are “not really the way to deal with the evil of HIV infection.” source
  • » Meanwhile … The rest of the world is ignoring him because nobody cares what the Pope thinks about condoms. Logic dictates that condoms work.

World: Pope Benedict to Spain: Your secularism is bad news, guys

  • The clash between faith and modernity is happening again, and it is very strong today. … Spain saw in the 1930s the birth of a strong and aggressive anti-clericalism.
  • Pope Benedict XVI • Seeming to suggest that Spain’s growing secularism will bring rise to the kind of fascism that led to the Spanish Civil War. See, Spain (currently ruled by Socialists) has done a few things that the Catholic Church doesn’t like, including getting rid of religious education in schools and legalizing abortion. The pope suggests a “meeting between faith and secularism and not a confrontation.” Perhaps we’re cynical, but does anyone see this as the Pope’s attempt to scare people back towards religion in Spain? source

World: Latest Iraqi terror attack aimed squarely at Catholics

  • 57 were killed during the standoff in a Baghdad Catholic Church
  • 75 more people were wounded in the attack
  • 17 of those killed were Iraqi security forces
  • two of those killed were priests source
  • » An awful end for many: Beyond the fact that terrorists attacked a Catholic Church in Baghdad, perhaps the worst fact about this whole situation is that many of the killed were hostages – most were killed or wounded after explosives were set off in the church. And they were killed because of their faith. The pope has already denounced the attack, which the Islamic State of Iraq took credit for with a note on their Web site: “The Mujahedeens raided a filthy nest of the nests of polytheism, which has been long taken by the Christians of Iraq as a headquarter for a war against the religion of Islam and they were able by the grace of God and His glory to capture those were gathered in and to take full control of all its entrances.”
