Politics: Max Headroom: Spinning the NYC-based 9/11 terror trial

  • A spirited defense Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has her work cut out for her in defending having the 9/11 terror trial in NYC. For the most part, her points make sense, even if they annoy Rudy Giuliani.

  • Gitmo like Disneyland?Michigan Rep. Pete Hoekstra perhaps misspoke when he referred to Guantanamo Bay as “a great place.” Hear that? It’s an instant soundbite for his Democratic challenger in 2010!

  • Get yo popcorn ready!Tomorrow promises to be some awesome TV for red-meat-eating conservatives, as Lou Dobbs brings the anti-immigration train (choo choo) to “The O’Reilly Factor.” Here’s the ad.

Politics: Andrew Sullivan’s blog reportedly has an obsessive reader (not us)

  • Sources with access to Palin have indeed told to me that the Wasilla whack-job was an obsessive reader of this blog as it dared to ask factual questions about her past that could be easily answered.
  • Super-blogger (and SFB fave) Andrew Sullivan • Posting yesterday about Sarah Palin, who reportedly wanted to sue Sullivan for statements he made regarding the birth of her daughter, Trig. We really like Gawker’s account of the whole thing, but are big fans of the way Andy himself worded word of the potential libel suit, too. • source

Tech: TechCrunch better launch the CrunchPad soon or something

crunchpad1115
  • It’s a pretty damn good idea, but if TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington can’t get this thing out the door before his competition (which may or may not include Apple), it might be for naught. The CrunchPad is reportedly near completion and hovering between the $300-$400 price range, which isn’t a bad price. source

World: Australia’s prime minister is very sorry about neglected orphans

  • We are sorry. Sorry for the tragedy – the absolute tragedy – of childhoods lost. Sorry that as children you were taken from your families and placed in institutions where so often you were abused. Sorry for the physical suffering, the emotional starvation and the cold absence of love, of tenderness, of care.
  • Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd • Speaking to a group of 1,000 “forgotten Australians” who were neglected and abused in orphanages between 1930 and 1970. He couldn’t sugarcoat this apology, no matter how he wanted to. “The truth is, this is an ugly story,” he continued. “The truth is great evil has been done.” • source

U.S.: Daily poll: Is medical marijuana a whiff of the future for pot?

  • Last week in Portland, Oregon (that bastion of hipsterism and indie rock and Elliott Smith shrines), a pot cafe opened up for medical marijuana users. Its the first of its kind in the country, and pretty much the only place it would really make sense at this point is on the West Coast. Anyway, with this new barrier broken, it’s about time to take stock – will pot usage be straight-up legal at some point, or will it at least be accepted? Vote above. source

Offbeat: Laser engraver playing Mario: Nerd has too much time on his hands

  • The nerd who came up with this concept – where a laser engraver plays the Super Mario Bros. theme using just its motor – is on some level cool. But on most levels, he’s begging to be alone every Saturday night for the next year. source
