Tech: Dear Wolfram Alpha: Working with Bing is actually smart

wolframalpha1112
  • Wolfram Alpha is a smart idea that has been neutered by bad decision-making – charging an embarrassingly-high price for their iPhone app, treating copyright like something they can control. Well, now they have something to grasp onto: Bing. While their searches aren’t all that useful by themselves (too insular), combined with a decent general-purpose search engine, it starts to feel like a killer app. This specific execution is why people got excited about the product at launch. Not the $50 iPhone app. source

World: Iran’s Ahmadinejad: We really want to cooperate on nukes. Really!

  • Today, Iran’s nuclear conditions are stabilized and we’ve entered the phase of nuclear interaction and cooperation, and today an important issue is international nuclear cooperation in construction of nuclear power plants, reactors and even Iran’s contribution to a world fuel bank.
  • Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad • During a prime time TV appearance. In case you’re like “Uh, WTF?”, so is everyone else. Ahmadinejad’s tone completely contradicts most Iranian leaders who have spoken out over the last few weeks regarding the proposed deal to essentially neuter Iran’s nuclear supply. But Ahmadinejad doesn’t have final say, and he may just be looking to win brownie points in the international community and within his own country. Still, though … • source

Politics: Sean Hannity’s looking the fool thanks to Jon Stewart

  • Do you see what Jon sees? That’s right, Fox News totally lied about the size of last Thursday’s anti-health-care rally on “Hannity.” So on last night’s “Daily Show,” Stewart dressed down Hannity for trying to inflate the size of the crowd using footage of the much-larger 9/12 rally. Good job, hoser. source

Politics: Olympia Snowe could get snowed out by her own party

  • Well of course there is an audience that would love to see Olympia Snowe out of office, within the ranks of social conservatives, that’s for certain.
  • Family Research Council Action PAC president Connie Mackey • Describing social conservatives’ newfound desire to get moderate Maine Senator Olympia Snowe out of office. The group is encouraged by a recent study by Public Policy Polling that showed Snowe would lose 59%-31% to a generic Republican challenger in a primary. For some reason, they think it’s a good idea to make their party more conservative, not less. We just don’t understand it. (hat tip Andrew Sullivan) • source

Politics: Lou Dobbs: The Last of the Mohicans on CNN; peace out brah

  • Who didn’t see this coming? Our boy Lou is like the DJ playing heavy metal on the smooth jazz station – he doesn’t fit CNN to the point that people regularly complain about it. As he notes, though, this will be sad – he was the last of original anchors on the network. Considering the open-ended way he spoke of leaving, we hope he does something completely left-field. Like run for president in 2010. Whaddya mean there isn’t a presidential election in 2010? As for CNN, they plan to announce a replacement tomorrow morning. Offbeat: We park our car just like this all the time

  • “HOLY CRAP SUSAN!” “Do you think anyone will notice, honey?” “Well, they just might, so you better get out of here.”
