U.S.: Kidnapper wife Nancy Garrido thought they were like a “family”

  • There came a time when she felt like they were a family. And she loves the girls very much, and she loves Jaycee very much. And that seems a little strange given the circumstance, but that’s she has said to me.
  • Gilbert Maines, Nancy Garrido’s attorney • Describing the bizarre family dynamic between her, her husband Phillip Garrido and Jaycee Dugard and her children. That’s right, a husband, a wife, a girl you kidnapped nearly 20 years ago, and the two daughters she had with the husband: The traditional nuclear family. • source

Sports: The NBA doesn’t want to be seen as the heavy on Twitter

  • David Stern sounds willing to find common ground. The NBA commissioner mentioned that the league was considering a Twitter policy akin to the NFL’s, but that it would be considerate of the players’ rights. The league has done a fairly good job of using the service so far, as they have over one million followers, and boast one of its most famous (and arguably best) users in Shaq. Don’t screw it up, guys. source

  • While my body was asleep, I think my soul rode on a triangular-shaped UFO and went to Venus. … It was a very beautiful place and it was really green.
  • Japanese first-lady-to-be Miyuki Hatoyama • Whose husband, Yukio Hatoyama, will be taking office as prime minister soon. Wow. Can we borrow some of this lady’s drugs? First ladies have never been this crazy (i.e. awesome) in the U.S. • source

Culture: Spike Jonze fans with lots of time on your hands: Read this

spikejonze0903
  • “It’s like the studio was expecting a boy, and I gave birth to a girl.” The New York Times Magazine has a massive, unspeakably awesome story up about Spike Jonze and his adaptation of “Where the Wild Things Are,” which sounds destined to be the kind of movie nerds will love and movie execs will cross their fingers and hope is a big hit. Jonze’s budget was as much as five times bigger as that of his last film, “Adaptation,” and he used it to create something which appears to possibly be breathtaking. Read every last word. source

Politics: Animation as politics: Why a health care public option is necessary

  • This animation follows the mold of the Obama penny videos from a while back. Clever YouTube animation used to argue a political point. This one, however, leans left.source
