The murders were probably the most bizarre and far-out in the recorded annals of American time. People are fascinated by the strange and the bizarre.
Vincent Bugliosi • The prosecutor of Charles Manson and members of his “family,” on why the murders continue to hold such a prominent place in popular culture. 40 years ago, Manson attempted to fire the opening shot in what he saw as an apocalyptic race war, convincing his family to go to the home of director Roman Polanski, where they killed actress Sharon Tate (who was pregnant) and six others. Despite the problems that California’s legal system is facing, they’re still in jail – the crimes were that insane. • source
Well, that’s one way to build a brand. Knob Creek’s bourbon has apparently been so successful of late that they’re literally out. Rather than use PR to spin this or do damage control, their advertising embraces it. If you ask us, that’s genius.source
What is the point? With bit.ly the Twitter default, and with us having no inside connection to Twitter, tr.im will lose over the the long-run no matter how good it may or may not be at this moment, or in the future.
A message posted on the tr.im blog • Saying that despite the site’s popularity, they don’t feel like the service will succeed and they’re going to shut it down. The post attacks other targets besides Twitter and bit.ly – including TweetMeme. They feel that they can’t sell the statistical information because everyone else has it. Nobody wanted to buy the service. And it just wasn’t worth it anymore. Twitter is now gonna be a graveyard of useless shortened links. Great. • source

It’s kind of crazy. The demand for internships in the past 5, 10 years has opened up this huge market. At this point, all we can do is teach students to understand that they’re paying and to ask the right questions.
University of Kansas career center director David Gaston • On the high demand for internships, which has created a niche market for services designed to help you (or your parents help you) get that awesome internship you always dreamed of. One organization, the University of Dreams, received 9,000 applications for the services last year alone. We don’t like this; this is very much gaming the system. • source
Dean v. Newt Howard Dean and Newt Gingrich – two former rising stars from another era – still have their hands in the political cookie jar, and both have a lot to say about the health care debate (be sure to watch part two, too). In this debate of wits, Dean gets the upper hand.

Economics for clunkers Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell chatted with Fox News about the Cash for Clunkers plan, saying that “if you pay people to buy TVs, or refrigerators, or … that sort of thing, people will go out and do it.” He leans hard on the fiscal conservatism line here.

So, how’s Kim Jong-Il? We know what you’re thinking. Bill Clinton went to North Korea and hasn’t told the world about Kim Jong-Il yet. Fortunately, National Security Adviser Gen. James Jones relayed it to the world on “Meet the Press.” He says Kim is still firmly in power of his country.
