World: We may never know why the Air France plane went down

  • The flight data recorders may be lost at sea forever. Noting that the crash happened in the middle of the ocean, investigators say it may be impossible to find. While the recorders give off a signal that lasts up to 30 days, they can’t find the signal because it’s floating underwater. France has sent a submersible to help find the signal. The depth of the Atlantic near where the wreckage was found is nearly 21,000 feet. source

Tech, World: Just in time for Tiananmen’s 20th anniversary, China blocks stuff

  • Most noticeably, anyone who lives in China and uses Twitter can’t use it right now, as access to the site has been blocked. So is Flickr and Hotmail. Basically, China is closed to Web 2.0. source
  • On top of that, China is blocking foreign news reports about the pro-democracy massacre, which they’ve been very careful to block from the public. They want to stop activists. source

U.S.: Latest reason we’re all gonna die: Nuclear data accidentally leaked

  • *forehead slap* Great job, federal government. The U.S. revealed in a newsletter yesterday that somebody messed up and released a 266-page document LOADED with information about civilian nuclear holdings as well as maps of where we keep all of the fuel for our nuclear weapons. The document was marked “highly confidential,” which sounds scary. Some experts claim the leak isn’t THAT big a deal, but it’s not the first data screwup while Obama’s been in office. source

World: A sad ending to the Air France missing plane saga

  • The last bit of hope that we had no longer exists … Before a lot of us were hoping that the plane could have landed on an island or something like that, but no more.
  • Aldair Gomes • Whose son was on the Air France plane that went missing earlier this week. The Brazilian army found the wreckage earlier today, and later confirmed what was likely but feared: The plane crashed into the middle of the Atlantic Ocean in bad weather, and everyone on board – 228 people – probably died. It’s the worst tragedy in Air France’s 75-year history. • source
