World: Prince Charles: Condolences for an assisted suicide

  • The elderly couple had to go abroad to die. Peter and Penelope Duff of Bath, England, chose to go to a euthanasia clinic in Switzerland. Both had cancer and both over 80. They couldn’t do it in the U.K. because it’s not legal. The Prince of Wales (who’s kind of old for a mere prince, by the way) sent a letter of condolences to the wealthy couple’s family, whose death is becoming a talking point in the right-to-die debate in the U.K. Can we just blame cancer instead of euthanasia? Seems easier to agree on. source

World: Zimbabwe PM Tsvangirai needed an escort, his party says

  • Logic would have demanded that police escort be provided to the prime minister to warn other traffic and this tragedy could have been avoided.
  • Tendai Biti • General-secretary of PM Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change. While Morgan survived with injuries and is out of the hospital, his wife Susan died. The MDC will investigate the crash, which happened in part because the driver was apparently asleep at the wheel. Zimbabwe can’t seem to get a freakin’ break. • source

Tech: Guess what’s coming? An alternative iPhone app store

  • Meet the Cydia Store. The Cydia Store, which only works on jailbroken iPhones, allows people to sell whatever iPhone apps they want, including one that allows you to use your phone like a modem and another that allows you to use your phone like a camcorder. These apps are currently not allowed in the App Store proper. Apple probably looks like this: >_< source

U.S.: Yo Republicans: Obama ain’t backing down from his policies

  • This country has never responded to a crisis by sitting on the sidelines and hoping for the best. We have a responsibility to act, and that’s what I intend to do.
  • President Barack Obama • At an Ohio graduation ceremony for police recruits, whose jobs were saved by his stimulus plan. Obama’s been facing tough criticism from Republicans lately over the stimulus package. • source

Music: Pitchfork Fest 2009: Getting us worked up already

  • The bands so far: Some of the bands already on board for the July 17-19 fest – which has only been partly announced – are killer. The first night is full of classic indie rockers like Built to Spill and Yo La Tengo. Day two boasts more recent indie faves like our current musical crush The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. And day three already boasts The Walkmen and Grizzly Bear. Sounds amazing. source

  • A cool new idea: The last few years of the fest have featured All Tomorrow’s Parties-sponsored shows featuring such luminaries as Public Enemy playing their greatest albums in full. But this year, they’ll allow fans to vote for what the bands play in their setlists. Want to hear Yo La Tengo play nothing but stuff from “I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One”? Or more recent stuff? Your vote counts! source

About, Politics: Why we’re adding a “Chatter” category

  • Ultimately, we need a spot for opinion. We’ve been wavering back and forth on this for a while, and while we do a pretty good job covering the news, there are some pretty smart things being said by columnists and bloggers worldwide that should get their due, too. And when we have an opinion – left or right – we should have a spot for it, too. Someone actually asked about this a couple weeks ago, and we didn’t have a good reason why we didn’t. Seems necessary in this day and age. Like it? Dislike it? Post your opinion here.
