U.S.: “Hugely significant”: First human embryonic stem cell trials approved

  • It’s hugely significant in the sense that it’s the first approval of a human embryonic stem cell trial. In this week of hope and change, it feels even better.
  • Amy Rick • president of Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research, on the first approved trials of embryonic stem cells. Some believe that Obama’s inauguaration is directly tied to the approval; others don’t want to give him sole credit • source

Music: If you seek Britney Spears’ “Amy,” look elsewhere

  • It sounds like something else! (OOH …) If you say the title to Britney Spears’ “If You Seek Amy” really fast, it sounds less like a directive about a friend and more like a come-hither request featuring a word you can’t play on the radio. Of course Spears would make it her new single! Few radio stations are playing it, despite its popularity, until her label comes out with an edited version that gets rid of the “k” on “seek.” (Some are even taking it into their own hands.) Just think, if removing the “k” could solve all of our moral problems … source

U.S.: Kirsten Gillibrand isn’t a Kennedy, but she is a New York Senator

  • I aspire to follow in her footsteps, knowing her shoes I can only hope to fill.
  • Kirsten Gillibrand • on Hillary Clinton, whose former New York Senate seat she was appointed to earlier today. Gillibrand got the nod over Caroline Kennedy, who was long-speculated to be a shoo-in for the seat. • source

World: A model loses her hands and feet in a bid to save her life

  • What happened? Mariana Bridi, a 20-year-old Brazilian model, was a rising star in the international modeling world, coming in fourth in a recent competition to be Brazil’s entrant in the Miss World pageant. But after going to the doctor in December suffering from what initially were thought to be kidney stones, she was eventually diagnosed with a urinary tract infection. Unfortunately, the infection had infected the blood by then. source

  • Trying to keep her alive Given just two weeks to live, Bridi had her hands and feet removed to help blood circulation through the rest of her body. In intensive care and on life support, she currently communicates with her family through blinking but thus far has held on. “They say her situation is very critical and that her chances are not really significant,” said Henrique Fontes, executive director of Miss World Brazil, “but she keeps on surprising everyone.” source

Offbeat, Sports: A 100-0 loss in girls’ basketball? Pssh, we really won!

  • My girls never quit. They played as hard as they could to the very end. They played with all their hearts at 70-nothing, 80-nothing and 100-nothing.
  • Jeremy Civello • Dallas Academy athletic director, on a 100-0 high school girls’ basketball loss that he’s way too freakin’ optimistic about. The Texas school, which deals with students with a variety of learning problems, pulled the team from the league shortly thereafter, and the opposing team calls the score an embarrassment – on their part. • source

Culture: “Veronica Mars” fanboys, rejoice! A movie’s getting made

  • The series creator switches gears. Back in the mid-naught days of UPN, a much-loved cult series named Veronica Mars captured the attention of a few. Of course, like many loved things, the Kristin Bell crime-solving series got canned, but now that series creator Rob Thomas’ latest TV project, Cupid, is getting scaled back, he’s ready to revive it in film form. “I suddenly find myself with enough time to write that script,” Thomas said. “That’s the next project.” While he has no confirmation that the cast will sign onto the project, they’ve expressed interest. source
