Sports: Golfer John Daly is freaking out, doesn’t think he has it anymore

  • The last two weeks have been
the first time in my career I didn’t think I could win. I don’t have
the feel I used to have. I don’t have the confidence. I just don’t have it.
  • John Daly • Describing his frustration with golfing after getting an 88 at the 2009 Buick Open this week. “I tried my [tail] off and shot 88,” he said. “I’ve thrown in the towel and shot 82 when I quit. But I didn’t quit this time. It was a weird feeling.” Daly is described to be out of sorts by his swing coach, who says he hasn’t slept and is barely eating after getting lap-band surgery four months ago. Daly has lost 80 pounds due to the surgery, which has taken away some of his ability to hit the ball. • source

Culture, Music: Robotic redux: Daft Punk to score “Tron 2.0”?

  • Whoever came up with this idea is a genius. Back in 1982, there was this Disney movie called “Tron,” a cult film unlike most of the stuff Disney releases, featuring high-tech (for the time) animation and visual style. It had a soundtrack by early electronic composer Wendy Carlos – a Moog master that was perfect for the job. For “Tron 2.0,” out in 2011, it appears that Disney is going that route again, giving French electro innovators Daft Punk the chance to make a complete score. We can’t wait. source

Offbeat, Sports: A 100-0 loss in girls’ basketball? Pssh, we really won!

  • My girls never quit. They played as hard as they could to the very end. They played with all their hearts at 70-nothing, 80-nothing and 100-nothing.
  • Jeremy Civello • Dallas Academy athletic director, on a 100-0 high school girls’ basketball loss that he’s way too freakin’ optimistic about. The Texas school, which deals with students with a variety of learning problems, pulled the team from the league shortly thereafter, and the opposing team calls the score an embarrassment – on their part. • source

Music: Why Pitchfork gave Animal Collective a glowing review

  • Everything that’s defined the band to this point – all those strands winding through their hugely diverse catalog – is refined and amplified here.
  • Mark Richardson • Who could be conservatively referred to as “gushing” about Merriweather Post Pavilion. He refers to it as their “pop” album. • source
