U.S.: Another round for the John Conyers v. Karl Rove battle royale

  • Change has come to Washington, and I hope Karl Rove is ready for it. After two years of stonewalling, it’s time for him to talk.
  • John Conyers • The House Judiciary Chairman, D-Michigan. Conyers has subpoenaed the former White House political director regarding the Bush Administration’s firing of U.S. attorneys and prosecution of a former Democratic governor. Rove has been subpoenaed before but refused to speak, saying that sitting presidential advisers could not testify before Congress. • source

Tech: Camera phones could have to click with the law

  • A new bill is making a clicking noise. Republican Rep. Peter King of New York recently introduced a bill to Congress that would force cell-phone-makers to have their phones make a “clicking” noise whenever they’re used, so as to prevent the shooter from using their phones as spy cameras. We’re not sure how we feel about this – it seems like there’s arguments for and against a bill like this. However, there appears that the bill is stuck in committee, so it may not even be an issue. source

Offbeat: 14-year-old Chicago teen plays police officer, gets caught

  • Five hours on patrol The teen, who showed a longstanding interest in police work, walked into a police station on Saturday and was assigned to duty almost immediately. He didn’t write tickets and never got behind the wheel, nor did he interact with the public, but he was savvy enough to check out his own equipment. source

He didn’t write tickets and never got behind the wheel, nor did he interact with the public, but he was savvy enough to check out his own equipment.
  • He almost got away with it … … but a supervisor became suspicious of his credentials after he returned from duty. (His “partner” had no clue that he was riding with a Frank Abagnale Jr. wannabe.) He lacked a police star, and was lacking important equipment, such as a bulletproof vest. The boy will be tried as a juvenile for the incident. source

U.S.: Russ Feingold: Senate appointments suck. Let’s kill them!

  • A new amendment Feingold, a beat-of-his-own-drummer Democratic Wisconsin senator noted for voting against the Patriot Act, has suggested that the recent New York and Illinois senate appointments have proven the idea to be antiquated. So, he plans to introduce an amendment later this week that ends senate appointments and replaces them with special elections. source

So, he plans to introduce an amendment later this week that ends senate appointments and replaces them with special elections.
  • “The will of the people” There is historic context to this, Feingold notes. “In 1913, the Seventeenth Amendment to the Constitution gave the citizens of this country the power to finally elect their senators,” Feingold said in a press release. “They should have the same power in the case of unexpected mid-term vacancies, so that the Senate is as responsive as possible to the will of the people.” source
