Politics: Report makes GOP’s budget cut deal look a lot lamer

  • $38
    billion
the agreed-upon spending cuts in the budget compromise struck in a shutdown-preventing bipartisan deal late last week
  • $350
    million
the actual value of the immediate cuts, according to the CBO, since most of the real effect is stretched over future years source
  • » So, what the hell can John Boehner do now? This recent analysis, if it’s both correct and widely disseminated, could have huge implications for the GOP going forward. Since becoming Speaker of the House, the contortions Boehner has made to try to appease the Tea Party contingent have been obvious and striking — it’s clear that his fiscal conservatism is less their sort and more that of establishment Republicanism, by which I mean he doesn’t really care about spending cuts in any significant measure. The $38 billion figure itself was but a minute fraction of the federal deficit, and Boehner looks really ineffective after if these numbers stick. Will the Republican and Tea Party marriage begin to splinter over news like this?

Politics: West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin is not very impressed

  • Why are we doing all this when the most powerful person in these negotiations, our president, has failed to lead this debate or offer a serious proposal for spending and cuts that he would be willing to fight for?
  • Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin • Calling out President Obama’s leadership on the floor of the Senate today. That this criticism came from freshman Senator Manchin shouldn’t come as a big surprise, as he’s a very conservative Democrat (you may remember him shooting the cap-and-trade bill with a rifle). With the looming departure of Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman in 2012, the West Virginia senator seems primed to hoist the title of “Democrat who most antagonizes his own party” going forward. source

Politics: Michael Moore: Newspapers sided with the GOP at their own peril (?!)

  • These newspapers slit their own throats by siding with the group of politicians – I mean, it would be like General Motors funding candidates who promised to get rid of Driver Education.
  • Michael Moore • Discussing the fate of the American newspaper. To further emphasize his point, he says that “we live in a nation of 40 million functional illiterates,” and this was caused by cuts in education that Republican leadership led to. While we don’t think that point is particularly sound, we’ll get behind this one regarding capitalism: “Same theory of General Motors that I watched twenty years ago. How can we get rid of half the employees but still put out the same number of cars? We’ll just make everybody work twice as hard and we’ll save money doing that. And that’s what happened to our newspapers.” • source
