U.S.: The only successful hand transplant video we’ll probably post today

  • Meet Emily Fennell. Five years ago, doctors amputated her hand after it was crushed in a very scary car accident that involved an open sunroof, a raised arm and a rolling vehicle. Six and a half weeks ago, a completely different set of doctors gave her a completely different hand. Here’s a clip of the 26-year-old getting used to her new hand as she goes through rehab. She’s very optimistic about her future with the new appendage. “That’s my goal — to just be able to function with it and not be able to think about it,” she said. source

Culture: UCLA legend John Wooden dead at 99, for real (sigh) this time

  • The guy is synonymous with college basketball. The former UCLA coach, who won ten titles helming the Bruins over 27 years, died today at 99. Some other key stats about the dude:
  • 19 number of conference titles Wooden won over his tenure
  • 88 number of games Wooden won in a row over four seasons
  • three number of All-American honors he earned as a player source

Off-the-court pride

  • I think that’s the factor from which i have received the greatest satisfaction and pleasure. The fact that practically all of my players did get their degrees and practically all of them have done well in whatever their chosen profession might be.
  • John Wooden • Regarding what he was most proud of in his basketball coaching career. He’s from a different era – an era where players went to school the whole term. Wooden might as well be chiseled out of history. The legend earned his place in basketball history the old-fashioned way. Through hard work. source

Culture: Don’t believe Twitter: John Wooden not dead yet, but gravely ill

  • A too-early report threw everybody off. Let’s face it. The legendary basketball coach, 99 and in grave health, probably isn’t going to be long for this world. But he isn’t dead let. However, Twitter seems to have jumped the gun on his fate. If it makes you guys feel better, this memorial photo gallery on the Washington Post’s site hit Google News early under the headline “John Wooden Dies at 99.” Oh boy. That isn’t good, guys. source

Tech: “Lo” and behold: 40 years ago today, the ‘net sent out its first message

  • So the very first message ever on the Internet was the very simple, very prophetic ‘lo,’ as in lo and behold.
  • University of California-Los Angeles computer science professor Leonard Kleinrock • Describing the first phrase that went over the internet 40 years ago today. The message was supposed to be “log,” but the computer crashed before the “g” could go through. He also sent it on a crazy machine with knobs and buttons and stuff. Imagine sending a tweet on that thing. • source

U.S.: UCLA tries to make sense of an on-campus stabbing

  • People are shocked that something like that would happen. But because we are at the university doesn’t mean we are immune from what goes on in the rest of the world. This could happen in a restaurant or a shopping mall.
  • UCLA biochemistry professor Sabeeha Merchant • Discussing the randomness of the stabbing of a female student in a chemistry lab.
