U.S.: Saddest story of the day: Deer escapes lions at National Zoo, still dies

  • This story isn’t nearly as scary as the woman who got bitten by a polar bear after jumping in the water, but in a lot of ways, it’s more dramatic and sad. This deer accidentally found itself in the lion enclosure at the National Zoo in D.C. and had a heck of a time getting away (as the video above attests). It succeeded eventually, but died anyway due to injuries it sustained in the escape. :(source

Biz: Retrospect, my name is Bank of America: A not-classic U2 rewrite

  • Did this disappoint you, or leave a bad taste in your mouth? You know, this video seemed out of place a few years ago, when it first became popular, when Bank of America was still riding high. Now, with the company still paying back TARP funds, living down its unpopular purchase of Merrill Lynch and famously charging absurd fees, it’s just sick. Ethan Chandler of Bank of America took U2’s message of comradery and twisted it into a message of greed. Way to miss the point.source

Music: Don’t Forget to Be Awesome: There’s a YouTube record label

  • Alex Day, above, has an album coming out on Thursday on DFTBA Records, a label created by two YouTube-based musicians. (DFTBA, by the way, stands for “Don’t Forget To Be Awesome.”) These guys made a pitch about the label, and we admit, while we don’t get into the nuances of YouTube culture that brought the label to the forefront, this is a smart idea.source

Tech, U.S.: Apps.Gov: The government hearts cloud computing, apparently

  • If you wanted the government to tell you using Facebook is smart, here you go. Apps.Gov is the U.S. government’s attempt to give a seal of approval to cloud computing – that nebulous internet thing that most people use on a daily basis without even realizing it. What’s amusing to us, beyond the useful productivity apps that the General Services Administration offers for purchase, is that they have a whole page devoted to social media. On this page, they tell you what you’ve already known for years if you have even a minor amount of technical knowledge: Wordpress, Facebook and YouTube (but surprisingly, not Twitter) are awesome! Thanks for the tips, brah. source

Tech, U.S.: Barack Obama sez you should watch your back on Facebook

  • Well, let me give you some very practical tips. First of all, I want everybody here to be careful about what you post on Facebook, because in the YouTube age, whatever you do, it will be pulled up again later somewhere in your life.
  • President Barack Obama • Discussing the danger of posting your entire personal life on Facebook – because, as everyone with half a brain knows, that stuff comes back to haunt you like a child you had with a filmmaker you were working with. Or a bunch of AIM messages with a congressional page. Or a lewd bathroom encounter in a Minneapolis airport. Or a stash of money hidden in a freezer. We could go on, but you get the idea. • source

Politics: Animation as politics: Why a health care public option is necessary

  • This animation follows the mold of the Obama penny videos from a while back. Clever YouTube animation used to argue a political point. This one, however, leans left.source

Offbeat: A few Navy guys put their twist on “I’m On a Boat”

  • In a few comments, some are criticizing these Navy guys for actually daring to have a little fun when they’re stuck in the middle of the ocean working. We don’t see that problem at all. In fact, we hope that they’re doing this instead of working, because they look so hard in this video that you can’t imagine any pirates would dare come up to their boat. (Props to The Lonely Island for the original, of course.)source
