Tech: WordPress founder confirms DDoS assault came from China

  • last week WordPress, the exemplary blogging platform, was hit with a massive distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack that stalled its servers. At the time, they believed it may have been politically motivated against a Chinese language blog.
  • this week While WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg updated the record in an email to IDG News Service, saying he no longer believed the motive to be political, he did confirm that the DDoS attack originated from China. A little international intrigue? source

Tech: Want to throw away 50 bucks? Have WordPress? Click here

  • $50 to make your WordPress theme iPad friendly source
  • » Why is this pointless? Not to criticize the hard work of Jason Baptiste, who clearly put a lot of time into this, but it just seems weird to pay $50 for an iPad version of a WordPress site. Why? Because, unless you’re using a bunch of Flash, your site is already designed to work properly on an iPad. And the price … there just aren’t enough iPad users to justify it yet, unless you’re Mashable. Even this site, while it would be great to do this eventually … $50 just seems steep. This is something you launch six months from now, after the Christmas season builds a huge iPad audience. Not now. Sure, there’s room to experiment with the form some more, but the timing just feels off.

Tech: Based on the numbers alone, Tumblr is becoming the new Twitter

  • 6.25million visitors tumbling their logs each month
  • 4.5Mnumber of posts getting tumbled each day
  • 650,000 number of posts getting tumbled daily a year ago
  • 255M number of pageviews the tumblelogging site got in July 2009
  • 420M number of pageviews Tumblr had leaped to by November 2009
  • 1.5B number of pageviews they had in June; thanks John Mayer source
  • » Should we switch to Tumblr? Obviously, with its quickly-growing community, focus on functionality and expansion, dead-simple API and genius “reblog” function, this awesome platform appears to be where it’s at. Nothing against you, WordPress, but this whole fracas with the maker of the popular Thesis theme suggests that you should take a step back.

Tech, U.S.: Apps.Gov: The government hearts cloud computing, apparently

  • If you wanted the government to tell you using Facebook is smart, here you go. Apps.Gov is the U.S. government’s attempt to give a seal of approval to cloud computing – that nebulous internet thing that most people use on a daily basis without even realizing it. What’s amusing to us, beyond the useful productivity apps that the General Services Administration offers for purchase, is that they have a whole page devoted to social media. On this page, they tell you what you’ve already known for years if you have even a minor amount of technical knowledge: Wordpress, Facebook and YouTube (but surprisingly, not Twitter) are awesome! Thanks for the tips, brah. source
