Tech, World: Twitter listens to its customers when it comes to Iran

  • Twitter planned a necessary upgrade for today at a somewhat strange hour (9:45 p.m. Pacific time). source
  • However, Twitter has become essential as a way for people in Iran to communicate with the outside world. source
  • People complained (loudly) about the downtime, so Twitter changed the time. Good for them! source

Tech, World: Why did #cnnfail trend last night? Because CNN buried Iran.

  • While Twitter, Flickr, YouTube and other social media sites are both a source of unfiltered information and a venue for public discussion, we still look to CNN, the BBC and their ilk to add context and meaning to this flood of data. And when they fail us, we demand more of them.
  • Mashable blogger Pete Cashmore • Reading the lay of the land for social networking – CNN played back their coverage of Iran and Twitter, which has championed CNN in the past (unless you’re Ashton Kutcher), turned their backs on them. Just because everyone can post news doesn’t mean we don’t want that news edited. Which is why CNN is (and heck, we are) useful as resources. Keep that in mind kids. • source

Tech: The Twittersphere has officially infiltrated the Commodoresphere

High on the list of things the world really needed: Breadbox 64, a Commodore 64 Twitter client, which is nonetheless awesome. source

Tech, U.S.: Twitter’s so popular now, smart people are doing it from space

  • From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!
  • Astronaut Mike Massimino • In the first Tweet from space. OK, who let this guy bring his iPhone onto the spacecraft? We admit, we misread “launch” as “lunch” and chuckled a little inside. • source

Culture: Serious business: Demi Moore got a suicide threat Tweet

  • Her fans stepped in to intervene. Last night, Demi Moore received a tweet from someone threatening to kill themselves. One of Moore’s fans called (not tweeted) the authorities, who put the woman in the hospital for a 72-hour psychological evaluation. And Moore, Ashton Kutcher’s wife and uber-tweeter, apparently sent a message thanking her fans for responding so quickly to the tweet. Nice work guys! source

Politics, Tech: Our biggest criticism of Twitter: Marketing “experts”

  • Twitter is actually great. Don’t listen to the haters who claim that all people ever do with Twitter is tweet about how they’re going to use the bathroom. It’s a great, versatile communication tool, and has largely taken the place of the chat rooms of Internet past. (Sorry, mIRC. We were good friends back in the day.) We’ve even made some good friends through Twitter. But we do have one problem with the site: Its overuse as a social marketing tool.

  • Social marketers must die. We agree, Twitter’s a great promotional tool. We use it ourselves to tell people about our latest updates. And it tells people when we’ve last trashed on U2. And we even chat with them! But then there’s users like @MikeKlingler and @DiyanaAlcheva. Both of whom have over 15,000 followers. Both of whom followed us today. Both of whom we’ll never actually communicate with. For the love of God, stop ruining a good thing!

Tech: Facebook + Twitter: They almost merged. Almost.

  • It became pretty clear it wasn’t going to happen. The deal would have to be done with Facebook stock. And then you have to figure out how much the stock is worth.
  • Peter Thiel • Facebook board member and a co-founder of Paypal. Thiel confirmed a proposed merger of Facebook and Twitter, which only fell apart because nobody knew how much Facebook’s stock was really worth. Structurally, it makes sense: status updates are essentially tweets. • source

Offbeat, Tech: Dear Twitter user: Why would you do this to yourself?

OK, Failwhale is cute. But not tattoo-worthy. May we suggest never wearing shorts? source
