Tech: Twitter may just have legs made for a long-term endurance run

  • The history of the Internet suggests that there have been cool Web sites that go in and out of fashion and then there have been open standards that become plumbing. Twitter is looking more and more like plumbing, and plumbing is eternal.
  • Technology observer Steven Johnson • On Twitter’s long-term prospects as a communication mechanism. Johnson’s comments are the centerpiece of an article by New York Times media columnist David Carr, who makes the argument that Twitter may just stick around as a long-term mechanism rather than a trend like MySpace or Friendster. Carr still sounds a little cynical of the idea, but even so, makes a killer point: “Professional acquaintances whom I find insufferable on every other platform suddenly become interesting within the confines of Twitter.” Twitter win. source

Politics: Why doesn’t Obama use Twitter? Clumsy fingers.

  • Well, first of all, let me say that I have never used Twitter. My thumbs are too clumsy to type in things on the phone.
  • President Barack Obama • Discussing at a town hall with a bunch of Chinese students in Shanghai why he doesn’t use Twitter. He goes further into a larger dialogue on free speech, though, explaining that although information flows a little too freely for his taste sometimes (a lot of criticism comes with it), he really appreciates how it “makes our democracy stronger and it makes me a better leader because it forces me to hear opinions that I don’t want to hear.” Nice save, bro. • source

Sports, Tech: The NFL put in a bunch of stupid rules against social media

  • team Players (or team officials) can’t tweet (nor can surrogate tweet for them) during the game, nor 90 minutes before or after. The surrogate part is the Ochocinco rule.
  • press They can only use social media to update once a quarter, so as not to usurp play-by-play mechanisms media outlets pay the NFL a lot of money for.
  • fans Fans can tweet to their heart’s content based on current rules. Which means you have a leg up on NBC News if you go to a Redskins game with a cell phone. source

Tech: Jakob Nielsen, usability’s stickler, makes the perfect Tweet

  • LAS VEGAS (October) and BERLIN (November): venues for our biggest usability conference ever http://bit.ly/UsabilityWeek
  • The Perfect Tweet • So designed by five rounds of Jakob Nielsen and his usability nerds. With this tweet, Nielsen considered everything: Wording, timing, the capitalization of letters, the number of characters, the visual impact of the line of text, the use of a bit.ly URL, and so on. We think he’s crazy and needs to throw in some hashtags. • source

Tech: First we were mad at Twitter. Now we’re mad at whoever’s DOSing them.

We’re sorry we were so mad at you this morning, Twitter. Our apologies. Denial of service attacks suck and help nobody, jerks. source

Biz, Tech: Small businesses make out like bandits on the Twitter bandwagon

  • I would love to say that I just had a really good idea and strategy, but Twitter has been pretty essential to my success.
  • Curtis Kimball • The owner of a crème brûlée cart in San Francisco, on how Twitter has managed to build his side business into something that no longer requires him to keep his day job. He’s not alone. In fact, Mashable recently ran a neat little feature on how food cart owners have been using Twitter to stand out from the pack. But even beyond that, small businesses are using the site to market goods, find related businesses to partner with and talk directly to consumers. • source
