Offbeat: ChatRoulette’s second celebrity: Speed illustrator Paz Bernstein?

  • While Merton was getting all of the attention, talented illustrator Paz Bernstein was hopping on ChatRoulette and drawing people live, on the fly, using a Wacom tablet. The fact that these illos are so well-done in such a short amount of time speaks highly of his abilities. And hey, now that Merton’s kinda faded a bit, maybe you can have a chance to shine, Paz. Oh, check out the dude’s portfolio. It’s pretty good and wide-ranging. source

Tech: Don’t bring iPads to Israel; it doesn’t fit their standards for tablets

  • They must have at least five commandments on them, minimum. Seriously, though, the iPad apparently does not meet standards for wi-fi in the country, which are the same as Europe’s. Kind of a stupid reason, by the way, considering there are MILLIONS of devices that support the form of wi-fi the iPad does. source

Tech: Sorry, world: Apparently, the iPad’s really popular in the U.S.

  • Faced with this surprisingly strong U.S. demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May.
  • A statement from Apple • Regarding the company’s decision to delay the international release of the tablet which we’re currently using to read tweets while blogging (Twitterrific for the win). The company says that they’ve already shipped half a million iPads but it appeared demand in the U.S. would top expectations for at least the next several weeks. We blame the awesome Reuters app. source

Tech: Engadget doesn’t know what to do with this JooJoo tablet

  • In terms of dumb tech moves, this ranks up there with Palm releasing the Pre the same week as the latest iPhone revision. The CrunchPad JooJoo hit Engadget’s desk today like a lump of coal, and while they want to review it and stuff, they also kinda hit on one of the busiest tech weeks of the year. Something about a tablet computer backed by a Silicon Valley guy with more cred than Michael Arrington. source

Tech: Best part of the Oscars so far: This freaking awesome iPad ad

  • To us, this year’s Oscars seem completely ho-hum. All the obvious winners are winning. All the obvious losers are losing. Hey, wait a second, that’s new! It’s an iPad ad. And it somehow makes the iPad look awesome again! Nice job, Apple!

Tech: The Apple iPad: Is the target audience the already-converted?

  • When it launches, the iPad’s initial target audience is iPhone and iPod touch users. Why? Because they are already very comfortable with the way you need to interact with this device.
  • TechCrunch columnist MG Siegler • Regarding the iPad’s initial target audience. It’s something Apple CEO Steve Jobs himself hinted at during his keynote address, saying, “If you have an iPhone, you already know how to use this.” And ultimately, that’s who’s going to be buying this, according to Siegler. It’s not perfect – it’s probably closer to a first-generation iPod than a first-generation iPhone in terms of completeness – but many users can already see its potential. It’s a CrunchPad on steroids. (Sorry, TechCrunch.) source

U.S.: iPad: Some Tablet thing got everyone worked up today

  • On the scale of one to awesome, the iPad is pretty cool. The $499 starting price is reasonable, as is the data plan. The high-end of the scale is admittedly pretty high, but it is just a giant iPod Touch. Let’s not kid ourselves. But really, isn’t that what we wanted? source

Offbeat: The Onion perfectly takes the piss out of the Apple Tablet

  • Okay, yeah, this will work. This will definitely work. Just need to write ‘tablet’ on this little strip of masking tape here and I’m golden. Oh, come on, you piece of #&*#! Just stick already!
  • “Steve Jobs” • In a pitch-perfect Onion article titled “Frantic Steve Jobs Stays Up All Night Designing Apple Tablet.” Wouldn’t it be awesome if Steve Jobs promised unbelievable things then only worked on them the night before, like he was the world’s worst procrastinator? We’d still buy his stuff. source
