Politics: Jon Stewart nails Glenn Beck on his health care hypocrisy

  • Beyond apparently being racist and losing advertisers, Glenn Beck seems to have flip-flopped entirely on his opinion of health care in the process of switching networks, as Jon Stewart casually notices in this Daily Show segment. Examiner blogger Ryan Witt does Beck a favor and shows he’s slightly more consistent than Stewart claims. However, it’s still a flip. (Unrelated side note: Comedy Central needs to fix their embed codes. They use tables and are necessarily messy.)source

Sports: Golfer John Daly is freaking out, doesn’t think he has it anymore

  • The last two weeks have been
the first time in my career I didn’t think I could win. I don’t have
the feel I used to have. I don’t have the confidence. I just don’t have it.
  • John Daly • Describing his frustration with golfing after getting an 88 at the 2009 Buick Open this week. “I tried my [tail] off and shot 88,” he said. “I’ve thrown in the towel and shot 82 when I quit. But I didn’t quit this time. It was a weird feeling.” Daly is described to be out of sorts by his swing coach, who says he hasn’t slept and is barely eating after getting lap-band surgery four months ago. Daly has lost 80 pounds due to the surgery, which has taken away some of his ability to hit the ball. • source

Sports: Brett Favre accepts his fate as a retired guy in Mississippi

  • It was the hardest decision I’ve ever made. I didn’t feel like physically I could play at a level that was acceptable. I would like to thank everyone, including the Packers, Jets and Vikings – but, most importantly, the fans.
  • Quarterback Brett Favre • Describing his decision to stay retired as opposed to trying to play for the Minnesota Vikings. Favre is kind of an old guy and has already retired twice, only to return once and nearly return a second time. Regarding the surgery that he went through in hopes of coming back, he says he realized it was time. “I have legitimate reasons for my decision,” he said. “I’m 39 with a lot of sacks to my name.” • source

Music: Beastie Boy MCA’s suffering from cancer; we made a rap in his honor

  • “My name is Adam Yauch and I am sad to say / I’m the guy with cancer known as MCA / It’s very treatable; it’s centered in a gland / But the Beasties canceled shows and we are very sad” / (enter Mixmaster Mike scratching for four counts) / “And I’m Mike D and I bust on the mike” / “And I’m Ad-Rock and we’re both still alright” / “We got his back until his back is straight / And we can both tour still with MCA”source

Biz, Tech: Warren Buffett thinks Steve Jobs shoulda said he was having surgery

  • If I have any serious illness, or something coming up of an important nature, an operation or anything like that, I think the thing to do is just tell – the Berkshire shareholders about it. I work for them.
  • Warren Buffett • On what he would’ve done if he was having the kind of surgery Steve Jobs did. Jobs needed a liver transplant and got one back in April. But the world didn’t know about it until just the other day. Not that Apple particularly missed him: Their stock is up 60% this year, most of which he’s been out on medical leave. • source

U.S.: Hilary Clinton was Secretary of Stating so hard, she broke her elbow

  • She fall down and go boom. Hilary Clinton, everyone’s favorite White House figure that lost in the primaries to Barack Obama, had an accident last night which resulted in a broken elbow. She’ll be back at work soon, but she needs surgery. Let’s get it over with and just give her a bionic arm already. source

Culture: Prince needs new hips, but we won’t make a pun about it

  • Dude won’t get surgery due to his religion. Prince, who is now old enough that all those years of hard gyrating have caught up to him, needs to replace both of his hips due to surgery, says Showbiz411.com’s Roger Friedman. (Wait a minute! Great to see you found work after this incident, Roger!) However, he’s a Jehovah’s Witness and is refusing the surgery. So now he’s using a cane. BTW, all the puns about this story from other sources are really painful, so we avoided them – narrowly. source

Sports: Golfer Phil Mickelson’s taking a break for his wife’s sake

  • She was diagnosed with breast cancer. Amy Mickelson will need major surgery within two weeks, so Phil – the best non-Tiger-Woods golfer on the tour – is taking an indefinite break to be by her side. Many golfers had words of condolences for the family, from superstar Woods to laughingstock John Daly. Yes, even John Daly. source

Culture: Octet mom Nadya Suleman won’t be able to have more kids

  • She’s having an operation to have part of her uterus removed. Suleman, who probably has more kids than she knows what to do with already, is having the procedure after doctors found benign fibroids – possibly pre-cancerous – in her uterus. So, those of you waiting for the possibility of Octomom, mark two, it’s not happening. Darn – we were wondering what 22 kids by one mom would be like, too. :( source

Sports: A-Rod’s hip, on top of the steroid saga, is making his life suck

  • Surgery on Monday. Dude’s out 6-9 weeks. Alex Rodriguez has had a pretty crappy last 30 days or so. And the topper is the hip. Initially thought to just be a cyst, he also has a torn labrum and will be out for a while recovering from arthroscopic hip surgery, which he’ll have on Monday. No word on whether he’ll blame his cousin for the hip injury. source
