U.S.: Cop killer in Oakland didn’t want to go back to prison

  • “A strange one” Lovelle Mixon, who died in the shootout that killed four police officers (the fourth has now died; he is no longer brain-dead) was afraid of going back to jail – a claim which perplexes investigators. They claim he would have only spent six months in jail for violating his parole, at most – a punishment which does not reflect the nature of the outburst. source

  • California’s worst in decades With the death of fourth officer John Hege, the shooting now takes its place as the deadliest attack on California law enforcement in nearly four decades. In the wake of the tragedy, family members came to Mixon’s defense. “I don’t want people to think he’s a monster,” said his sister, Enjoli Mixon. “He’s just not. He’s just not.” source

Politics, U.S.: Note to the AP/Oakland P.D.: “Dead” ≠ “Brain-dead”

  • This is the danger of being too hasty to report facts. The police made a bad mistake and the AP reported it. Be careful! These are people we’re talking about. source

World: What was the German school shooter’s motive? “For fun.”

  • He was preparing himself for the next shooting – that’s what went through my mind.
  • Igor Wolf • The man forced to drive Tim Kretschmer away from the school where he shot numerous students in Germany. Wolf said Kretschmer asked about going to another school. 15 people died in Kretschmer’s attack. Authorities are also looking into involuntary manslaughter charges against Kretschmer’s father. • source

U.S.: Alabama shooter left a note; he planned to go out in “grand style”

  • Why he did it Without specifying the specific details of the note, investigators said that Michael McLendon’s note explained a row with his family that left him harboring ill feelings. McLendon also disliked the way he was treated at work – he was given the nickname “Doughboy,” which he didn’t like. McLendon killed many members of his family and many co-workers during the shooting on Tuesday. source

  • Dreams unfulfilled McLendon aspired to be a Marine and, later, a police officer. After enlisting in both at different times, he was let go from each only weeks in. In the case of the Marines, he was let go due to “fraudulent enlistment,” and with the police, physical issues were at play. He was depressed and unhappy with his lot in life, according to statements he made towards the end of it. source

U.S.: Pastor shot, killed during a service; nobody’s sure why.

  • It hit the very top of the Bible and exploded on top of the Bible and turned into what many thought was confetti. In fact, some thought it was some type of skit or some type of program at the time.
  • Illinois State Police Director Larry Trent • About the first shot fired at the Rev. Fred Winters. The second shot him him in the chest and he died. The incident, which also wounded others, has shaken the First Baptist Church in Maryville, Ill., but nobody’s sure what the connection between the pastor and shooter was – if there was any. • source

Sports: New York Giants: Yeah, Plaxico probably isn’t coming back

  • We’ll prepare as if he’s not going to be here, and if he is, it’s a bonus.
  • Jerry Reese • New York Giants general manager, on Plaxico Burress’ status. The Super-Bowl-winning wide receiver has been a giant question mark since he shot himself in the leg at a New York nightclub, then got charged with a felony for the (admittedly pretty stupid) deed. • source

  • Echoes of a major tragedy The tragedy shook the campus of a university that, just a year and a half ago, suffered one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history, when a gunman shot 32, then himself. University president President Charles Steger was cognizant of the emotions on campus. “An act of violence like this brings back memories of April 16,” he said. “I have no doubt that many of us feel especially distraught.” source
