Tech: Protip: Don’t click on that New York Times antivirus ad

  • Some NYTimes.com readers have seen a pop-up box warning them about a virus and directing them to a site that claims to offer antivirus software. We believe this was generated by an unauthorized advertisement and are working to prevent the problem from recurring.
  • A note from the New York Times • Informing readers of a malware ad that the site was offering up. Mac users obviously weren’t affected, but some pretty nasty, scary stuff happened to PC users. • source

U.S.: Here’s a quote in the Jaycee Dugard case bound to stick with you

  • That’s the one I want. She’s cute, but she’s with the other kids. Let’s come back later and get her.
  • Phillip Garrido (according to his wife, Nancy) • When the couple went “child-shopping” before Jaycee Dugard’s capture. He was looking for a cute blonde, and Dugard fit the bill. You remember that whole thing you were told as a kid about not talking to strangers and that sort of thing? This is why. People like Phillip Garrido are actually out there. • source

U.S.: Near the finish line: These cats strike fear in our hearts

  • Meet the uber-evil kitty Kitty, owned by friend of the site David Putney, is perhaps the scariest, most violent cat you’ll ever meet. According to Putney, she was getting agitated because we took so long to actually get her up. Hopefully she won’t claw our faces now.

  • Meet Buster, a.k.a. Mr. Yawny Lucas McCallister sent us this wonderful photo of a cat yawning which somehow makes us never want to be near a yawning cat ever again. Look at those freaking teeth! They could bite off a finger – or kill an unsuspecting mouse or two!

    Buster yawning. Scary.

Offbeat: She said yes. Then she fell down a rocky incline.

  • That must have been a heck of a proposal. I believe she did [say yes] … If she didn’t, I think we ought to investigate this one.
  • Montgomery County, Maryland Fire and Rescue Service Assistant Chief Scott Graham • On a proposal with a romantic beginning but a rocky, bizarre end. During a hike, a guy asked for his girlfriend’s hand in marriage. Then she fell down a rocky incline (just like Homer Simpson) and had to be rescued via helicopter. At some point during the hike, she said yes. While she lost consciousness for a little while, her injuries weren’t serious. • source

U.S.: Flash mobs can be used for violence as well as internet memes

  • Just ask victim Thomas Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald was one of many recent victims in a rash of “flash mob” incidents in Philly. But instead of doing fun stuff, like giant pillow fights, these mobs are violent. Cars have been smashed in. People have been beaten. Stores have been robbed. Police have been forced to step up their game in the wake of the incidents, which sound like nightmares to law-abiding citizens. Three have been arrested so far, but more than 100 have taken part in the incidents. source
