Politics: Sonia Sotomayor is giving the GOP major spin troubles

  • Republicans appear to have given up fighting her nomination. The Supreme Court nominee, who goes up against the Senate next week, appears – much like the guy that nominated her, Barack Obama – to be a tough cookie to crack. She’s a minority and a woman – two groups the party struggles with – and worse, Sen. Jeff Sessions, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, has fought off allegations of racism in the past. Plus, the GOP has just 40 votes in the Senate. Which sure makes it seem like they’ve given up on fighting back, doesn’t it? source

Politics, U.S.: Sarah Palin: I’m leaving office to change the freaking world!

  • I am now looking ahead and how we can advance this country together with our values of less government intervention, greater energy independence, stronger national security, and much-needed fiscal restraint.
  • Sarah Palin • On her Facebook page, in response to the criticism she’s gotten since deciding somewhat randomly to leave office yesterday. Without offering firm details, she makes it clear that her future plans involve trying to focus on improving things on a national scale. Regarding the sometimes hostile response to her resignation, she says that “for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make.” • source

U.S.: Sarah Palin’s rise to prominence happened fairly quickly

  • Then today, claiming that she wanted to do more for the world outside of government, she unexpectedly resigned. Depending on who you ask, the post was either holding her back or she screwed up. Too early to tell.

U.S.: Norm Coleman: Gritting his teeth but accepting the decision

  • I told him it’s the best job he’ll ever have – representing Minnesota in the United States Senate. The Supreme Court has spoken, I will respect its decision, and abide by its results,
  • Former Minnesota Senator Norm Coleman • On losing a long, contested battle with former funnyman Al Franken. The Republican famously fought tooth and nail to keep his seat showing up on talk shows and having a constant perch in the courtroom where the election’s fate was being decided. But it wasn’t enough to save his seat. • source

Politics, U.S.: A handy guide to GOP presidential wannabes-turned-also-rans

  • Now, their latest hope, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, is bummin’ thanks to an Argentinean ladyfriend. Ouch. source

Politics, U.S.: Fox News mixes paper and plastic when it takes out the trash

Just ’cause you don’t like something a Republican did (in this case, Mark Sanford) doesn’t automatically make him a Democrat. source

U.S.: That N.Y. state senate cluster^*#& is becoming a bigger one

  • One of the defectors says there isn’t enough Democratic support. Hiram Monserrate, one of the two guys responsible for leaving the Democratic-led New York State Senate majority in favor of a Republican-led one, walked out abruptly tonight, saying that there wasn’t enough support for the change and he needed to recruit more Democrats to help. So, which one of your alienated fellow party members are you going to hit up first, Hiram? Hope, like this guy, you like rejection. source

Politics, U.S.: New Democrat Arlen Specter’s now getting it from both sides

  • There’s too much doubt in my mind not to have the intent right now to get in this race, pending just a little time with my family to make sure we’re all together.
  • Pennsylvania Rep. Joe Sestak • Who seems ready to take on longtime Republican Senator Arlen Specter, who recently switched to the Democratic party, in the primaries. Specter, if you remember, switched parties in part because he was afraid he would lose the Republican primaries. Ah, giant nebulous areas. You gotta love ’em. • source

Politics: Colin Powell fights back against Cheney, Limbaugh criticism

  • I would like to point out that in the course of my 50 years of voting for presidents, I have voted for the person I thought was best qualified at that time to lead the nation. Last year, I thought it was President Barack Obama. For the previous 20 years, I voted solidly for Republican candidates.
  • Colin Powell • Responding to the verbal shouting match between him, former Vice President Dick Cheney and everyone’s favorite loudmouth, Rush Limbaugh. Powell goes further to say that the party needs to be more inclusive if it wants to find its way – which goes against many things Cheney and Limbaugh are arguing for, BTW. • source

Politics, U.S.: Dick Cheney once again gets himself in the GOP’s chatter

  • If I had to choose in terms of being a Republican, I’d go with Rush Limbaugh. My take on it was Colin had already left the party. I didn’t know he was still a Republican.
  • Dick Cheney • Discussing the verbal to-do between Colin Powell and Rush Limbaugh. Cheney and Powell have worked closely together over the years but have become more estranged since the first George W. Bush administration, a point accented by Powell’s support of Obama in the last election. Cheney’s had a recent history of this, by the way. • source
