World: Radioactive water continues to leak into ocean from Fukushima

  • » The flow has continued at a seemingly unchanged rate. This is bad news for pretty obvious reasons- the leak, coming through an eight-inch crack in a pit containing power cables, is sending water irradiated at 1000 millisieverts per hour into the ocean. Having tried pumping in concrete and failed to make any progress, TEPCO’s next plan is to employ a similar strategy using a type of polymer. Polymer spraying has already been happening throughout the plant, in an effort to prevent radioactive isotopes from escaping into the environment.

  • Brad Flora (of The Windy Citizen, a site we really like and recommend) • On the fate of the Olympics in Chicago, which took a nosedive in part because of strong skepticism the endeavor faced for years from what Flora describes as nerdy critics who pointed out budget crises that could be caused by two weeks of sweaty people doing sweaty things. Flora portrays Obama as the guy whose job was to bridge both the nerds and the jocks, having cred with both. But he couldn’t pull it off. • source

Offbeat, Tech: Apple Stores in Chicago have very thick glass walls

  • Some dude tried, and failed, to throw a brick through one. The store, located on the Magnificient Mile, now has a window in front of an iPhone display that’s all cracked up, but the glass did not come crashing down. So remember, glass walls at Apple Store aren’t just for show. They’re there to prevent bricks from going through. source
