World: Time for action: The U.S. and Afghanistan take the Taliban head-on

  • Get your war on! In the first major assault since Obama moved to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan, NATO and the U.S. are attacking the Taliban stronghold of Marjah, which is a new style of fighting for the region. Marjah is the last large stronghold the Taliban has in the rough and tumble Helmand Province. Here’s a lineup of the troops ready to kick ass and chew bubble gum:
  • 4,500 U.S. Marines are leading the offensive
  • 1,500 Afghan troops are joining in the attack
  • 300 U.S. soldiers are taking part, too source

Tech: 4chan blocked by Verizon Wireless. Will they ever learn?

  • You just don’t block 4chan. You just don’t. Back in July, the site – which revels in offensiveness and the more controversial end of free speech – was blocked by AT&T over reports of a denial of service attack, later found to be caused by a “network error.” The case with Verizon Wireless, however (which doesn’t affect landline DSL connections, by the way), was based on content. Site owner moot was told the site was “explicitly blocked” by the company. Net neutrality was created for this reason, guys. source

Politics: Tom Tancredo’s speech not the best way to start a Tea Party

  • People who could not even spell the word ‘vote,’ or say it in English put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House. His name is Barack Hussein Obama.
  • Former U.S. Rep. from Colorado Tom Tancredo • At the beginning of the Tea Party convention in Nashville last night. Can we list the ways this statement is offensive? 1.) It’s borderline racist in not one, but two ways (three if you think the part about not being able to spell the word “vote” is a slight on a certain race), 2.) It points out Obama’s middle name in a way to discount him, and 3.) It suggests that people who voted for Obama are idiots. It’s not like he doesn’t have a history of incendiary comments, either; this is the guy who called Miami a “third-world country.” Is this the guy you want opening up your Tea Party convention? source

Politics: Haiti earthquake: Pat Robertson is a douchenozzle

  • The CBN host with the most racist philosophies possible said that Haitians are getting punished by Satan for the slave revolt that liberated their country 200 years ago. Dude, do you just wait for bad things to happen to go crazy? source

Offbeat: Perhaps this class shirt that goes to 11 should be reconsidered

  • That’s not offensive at all! Students at Edsel Ford High in Dearborn, Mich. (which is largely made of Arab-American students) thought that this shirt portrayed a brave face, a show of strength. Instead, it drew instant scorn from school officials and just about everyone else. We can’t quite pinpoint what it is, but we think it has something to do with the bird. Let’s just put this in the “nice try” bin and go back to the drawing board, OK? source

Culture, World: Nigerians say “District 9” makes them look like mongrels

  • I was so angry. They were showing Nigerians as corrupt, eating aliens, saying they have sex with aliens. I could not watch that.
  • Atlanta-based Nigerian native Ken Umeano • Describing his disgust with “District 9,” a sci-fi movie that’s been universally acclaimed for its strong moral center but criticized by some for its depiction of Nigerians. It’s so bad that Nigeria’s banned the movie and wants an apology from Sony Pictures. “‘District 9’ is a work of science fiction, and no offense was intended toward any country or person,” Sony’s PR person shot back, noting that the country initially approved the movie for release. • source

U.S.: Racist net dude Hal Turner arrested for threats to Chicago judges

  • Turner’s threats Turner, a white supremacist, radio host and blogger who’s claimed to be so far to the right that he makes Rush Limbaugh look liberal, said this in response to a recent court decision banning handguns in Chicago: “Let me be the first to say this plainly: These judges deserve to be killed.” source

  • Going too far He also posted their vital information on his site, along with a picture of the courthouse mentioning where barriers were put up to prevent truck bombs. WTF man? The court in question is sensitive to threats, after District Court Judge Joan Lefkow’s mom and husband were killed in 2005. source

Culture: This is what happens when you create a show about polygamy

  • Obviously, it was not our intention to do anything disrespectful to the church, but to those who may be offended, we offer our sincere apology.
  • HBO • In a statement about their show “Big Love” and its portrayal of an endowment ceremony within a Mormon temple. Well, mayhaps, but you’re still airing the episode, aren’t you? So, even with the apology, you’re still getting boycotted. Good job! • source
