Tech: Apple’s recent buy: What the heck is LiquidMetal, anyway?

  • As you can see, it’s not your average metal. The metal, which has glasslike properties, high flexibility and extreme toughness (and can easily be made en masse), was developed at the California Institute of Technology. It’s already used in the iPhone 3G and 3GS’ SIM remover, and is now alone, in the electronics sphere, thanks to an exclusive license with the company. Maybe Apple will cover their next iPhone in something other than glass. We can dream, can’t we? source

Culture: Pop quiz: What year was this photo taken? Take a guess.

  • The winner gets a PBR the next time we see them in person. We can afford it. They cost what, 65 cents in Portland? (Hat tip Charles Apple and others) source

Tech: Blendtec ups the “Will it Blend” production values for the iPhone 4

  • The phone took a lot longer to blend this time. Sensing an opportunity to jump on the Gizmodo drama, Blendtec’s popular “Will it Blend” series added a little bit of a plot to its iPhone blending fun. One thing that’s clear from the clip – the iPhone screen is much tougher than the last few have been, because it actually holds up for a few seconds before turning into mush. Also, the “Blend My Phone” contest is freaking brilliant.

Offbeat: Dear Onion: Your avant-garde Obama story is one of your greatest

Weekly Address: Jobs Creation from White House Weekly Address on Vimeo.

  • For people who think that avant garde music and film is completely stupid, The Onion agrees with you. They agree with you so much, in fact, that they created this spot-on parody of the avant-garde movement, using Obama’s weekly video addresses as a vector. It’s the funniest non-good-timing thing they’ve done in a while. source

Tech: The Microsoft Courier reborn? Toshiba’s Libretto looks very similar

  • Main difference? It uses Windows 7. Eww. This little device, launched in a limited edition to celebrate Toshiba’s 25th anniversary in the laptop market, has more laptop in its DNA than tablet, though it definitely has aspects of both. Windows 7 just does not seem like the OS for a device like this, though. At least it’s not Windows Vista. source

Offbeat: Three words: Tap-dancing duck. (Tap-dancing duck?!?!?)

  • This duck could totally make a routine out of this. Give him some bread and he’ll go all Fred Astaire on you. He should use his skills to speak out for his oil-soaked brethren in the Gulf Coast. Just sayin’.

Music: Devo’s listening parties: Much more feline than yours

  • We’re sure the “I Can Has Cheezbuger” folks love this. To celebrate the band’s release of its first album in about 20 years (years which have been spent, among other things, in “Rugrats” purgatory), the band had a listening party. In a room full of cats. Seems pretty awesome, right? (Hat tip Laughing Squid) source

Tech: ESPN says screw it, just throws iPads and Xbox 360 games on air

Despite being owned by Disney, one of the more uptight media companies in the world, ESPN apparently thinks like a startup. Which is cool. source

Offbeat: Japanese students get bored, recreate Mario in classrooms

  • Protip: If you want us to post a video of something you’ve done, just add Mario. It’s like an instant draw for some stupid reason.

Tech: Ever wanted to charge your phone with a bike? Today’s your lucky day

  • Do you know how many urban hipsters would use something like this to charge their phones? Oh wait, it’s a Nokia product. Nevermind. That’s fine, though, because it’s not designed for urban hipsters, but developing countries lacking electrical outlets. source
