World: Investigators: Chinese universities the root of Google’s hack attacks

  • One of the two schools is tied to the Chinese military. The National Security Administration’s investigation into Google’s hacking claims has led to Shanghai Jiaotong University and the Lanxiang Vocational School. Jiaotong in particular has one of the country’s strongest computer science programs, while Lanxiang is directly tied to the Chinese military. What does this mean all mean? It means that it may have been rooted in China even if the government itself wasn’t involved. This could get interesting. source

Biz: Despite many chances, Bernie Madoff surprised he wasn’t caught sooner

  • It was a nightmare for me. I wish they caught me six years ago, eight years ago.
  • Bernard Madoff • Speaking during a June prison interview with investigators about the Securities and Exchange Commission’s constant probing of his ponzi scheme. You start to feel sympathetic until you realize that this jerk could’ve easily said something six or eight years ago and prevented some of the $21 billion in investor losses. So Bernie gets no sympathy. • source

U.S.: America’s biggest prick … er, “toughest sheriff” investigated

  • He’s unconstitutionally acted to racially profile many persons in the community, persons who appear or are Latino.
  • ACLU lawyer Dan Pochoda • Describing why Maricopa County, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio is a big jerk who they’re suing for racial profiling. He’s also under investigation by the Justice Department for violating civil rights. This is the guy who puts people (including Charles Barkley!) in jail wearing old-school prison stripes and pink underwear. • source

U.S.: Raymond Clark III now officially arrested in the Yale murder case

  • He’s not the only suspect in Annie Le’s murder. They’re still investigating. It seemed clear over the last couple of days that this would happen ever since his name got leaked into the press. Clark, an animal lab technician, was arrested this morning in the case. He is one of only a few people that was in the area at the time of the slaying, Yale University said, though police say dozens of people had access to the area. source

U.S.: Bones on Phillip Garrido’s property: Signs of something sinister?

  • We have located what appear to be bones on both properties. We can’t tell at this point if those bones are human or animal.
  • Hayward, Calif. Police Department Lt. Chris Orrey • Describing the scene of the Jaycee Dugard case, which was further investigated today. Bones were found on both Phillip Garrido’s property and a nearby one. While it’s possible that the bones could be human, it’s just as possible that they’re not. More tests are being done. • source

Politics: Cheney: That silly CIA investigation? Pssh, whatever!

  • I’m very proud of what we did in terms of defending the nation for the past eight years, successfully. And it won’t take a prosecutor to find out what I think. I’ve already expressed those views.
  • Dick Cheney • Defending the Bush administration’s record on detainee treatment. Regarding the CIA investigation, which he calls a “political act,” Cheney says “it will depend on the circumstances” whether he cooperates. Why didn’t Cheney talk this much when he was vice president? • source

Music: DJ AM’s autopsy: Thus far, the results are inconclusive

  • He had reportedly been drug-free for 11 years. The NYC Medical Examiner’s office is reporting that the cause of Adam Goldstein’s death is currently unclear. Bottles of prescription medications and drug-smoking paraphernalia were found near the DJ’s body. A painful, tough sort of irony: Goldstein was to be one of the stars of “Gone Too Far,” a drug-abuse intervention show on MTV. No word on whether the show will still air. source

Culture: Legal analyst: Expect charges against Dr. Conrad Murray soon

  • I have no doubt he’s going to be indicted … Just the amount of work tells us that.
  • Defense attorney Roy Black • Analyzing the likelihood that Dr. Conrad Murray will be indicted in the Michael Jackson case. Investigators have spent months gathering evidence against him – search warrants, interviews, so on and so forth. And Fox News didn’t even have to announce this analysis, which aired on “Good Morning America,” a week early! • source

World: A Brazilian TV show host lives life like a “Murder, She Wrote” episode

  • Manaus can no longer live with this wave of crime. Nowadays everyone is killing.
  • Brazilian politician and TV host Wallace Souza • On his TV show “Canal Livre.” His show had this uncanny tendency to be first on the scene of a crime, so much so that authorities are investigating him and the show for actually committing the crimes that they reported. The crimes conveniently had a tendency of proving his point and boosting his ratings. Sure, Souza’s possibly a bad guy, but the real bad guy is Jessica Fletcher. Every time she showed up in some random small town, somebody died! He basically just recycled the script. The real crime here is plagarism, kids. • source
