Tech: FCC to Apple and AT&T: Explain why you’re blocking Google Voice

  • Stern letters? Submitted. The other day, it came out that Apple had declined Google’s submission of a Google Voice app on the iPhone, saying the app duplicated functionality on the iPhone. Usually, customers get grumpy about things like this and it gets ignored, but this time the Federal Communications Commission stepped in, sending letters to Apple, Google and AT&T, asking what led to this. It’s not a formal investigation, but the pressure is definitely good for consumers. The FCC, however, is investigating the exclusive relationship between some carriers and some phone-makers. Like, you know, Apple and AT&T. source

Culture: Source: Michael Jackson’s doctor gave him a lethal dose

  • The doctor gave him Diprivan, and that did him in. According to a source close to the investigation and the Jackson family, authorities have their pinpoints directly on Dr. Conrad Murray, the live-in doctor who was apparently giving the now-deceased King of Pop his pills. Last week, authorities were looking in Murray’s office in Houston, supposedly for evidence of manslaughter. So yeah, put that in your pipe and smoke it. (Note that we could’ve gone with a pill metaphor but didn’t.) source

U.S.: The FBI goes out on a limb to defend Sarah Palin

  • Normally, we don’t confirm or deny those kind of allegations out there. But, by not doing so, it just casts her in a very bad light. There is just no truth to those rumors out there in the blogosphere.
  • FBI Special Agent Eric Gonzalez • Regarding rumors that Sarah Palin was under investigation for corruption during her tenure as governor of Alaska. It’s interesting that they went out of their way to actually say something about it. So, in other words, she really did leave office because she wants to become president. • source

U.S.: South Carolina police: Mark Sanford broke no laws with his tryst

  • What he did on his own personal time doesn’t require him to pay back anything. He did that for his own reasons. There was no legal requirement that he pay back any of that.
  • S.C. State Law Enforcement Division Director Reggie Lloyd • On Gov. Mark Sanford’s affair and whether or not he did anything wrong. Lloyd says, after an investigation, he did nothing wrong and in fact didn’t have to pay back any money for that business trip to Argentina he took – during which he had a free day where he was with his mistress. He’s getting called on to step down at the moment, but has avoided the pressure thus far. In other news, he’s a poster boy for why you shouldn’t use e-mail to have an extramarital affair. • source

They’ve agreed to meet with the four presidential candidates, including Mir Hossein Moussavi, whose supporters have largely been leading the opposition protests. Whether this will change anything is anyone’s guess. • source
