  • good New research suggests a protein, GM-CSF, controls lung damage from smoking and can be turned off with the use of a pill.

Culture: Alec Baldwin sent to hospital after pill scare, but really, he’s fine

  • It sounds like his daughter overreacted. Baldwin, the “30 Rock” superdynamo, was sent to the hospital for an hour after his daughter, Ireland (best known as the daughter he famously called a “thoughtless little pig”) called 911. She claimed he was going to take pills. His rep claims it wasn’t really a bad incident at all. “This was a misunderstanding on one person’s part,” said the star’s rep, Matthew Hiltzik. “Alec was quickly released from the hospital, he’s completely fine and will be at work today.” source

Culture: Source: Michael Jackson’s doctor gave him a lethal dose

  • The doctor gave him Diprivan, and that did him in. According to a source close to the investigation and the Jackson family, authorities have their pinpoints directly on Dr. Conrad Murray, the live-in doctor who was apparently giving the now-deceased King of Pop his pills. Last week, authorities were looking in Murray’s office in Houston, supposedly for evidence of manslaughter. So yeah, put that in your pipe and smoke it. (Note that we could’ve gone with a pill metaphor but didn’t.) source

U.S.: 150 years before abortionist George Tiller, there was Ann Lohman

  • Would your wives, and your sisters, and your daughters, if once absolved from fear, all become prostitutes? I cannot conceive how men who are husbands, brothers or fathers can give utterance to an idea so intrinsically base and infamous.
  • “Madame Restell” a.k.a. Ann Lohman • Who was infamous for performing abortion services in the mid-1800s, including a mail-order service that provided pills in newspaper ads which came with warnings that “miscarriage may occur.” As her clientele was often wealthy, she avoided significant jail time in an era when abortion was illegal, but after decades of harassment, she committed suicide in New York in 1978. There are parallels between Lohman’s case and George Tiller’s, obviously. • source
