Politics: Democratic senators call out Obama’s HHS Secretary on birth control

  • We ask that you share with us your specific rationale and the scientific data you relied on for the decision to overrule the FDA recommendation [to increase access to Plan B].
  • Fourteen Democratic Senators • In a letter to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who last week overruled an FDA recommendation that Plan B, the emergency contraception, be available without prescription to minors. In the words of Greg Sargent, who reported the story, “it isn’t every day that 14 Senators aggressively call out their own party’s Health and Human Services Secretary.” Then again, a lot of Senate Democrats are up for re-election next year, so there is an element of realpolitik at play.  source

Offbeat: Florida woman has twins from — SURPRISE — two separate uteri

  • whatTwo healthy babies. Two uteri. One mother. A Florida woman’s rare condition, called “uterus didelphys,” allowed her to have children in two separate uteri. So they’re twins, kinda sorta.
  • how? It’s incredibly rare for a mother to become pregnant in both uteri. There are only 100 known cases, and only one in five million uterus didelphys pregnancies succeed. This was one of them! source

Culture: Guess who said this quote, and we’ll tell you later

  • I feel like I’ve been pregnant more than a year. I never gave up. But I can tell you that it was physically and emotionally exhausting.
  • Celine Dion • Regarding her new pregnancy (finally!); Dion had been trying in-vitro fertilization for a while before it actually happened. She was successful on her sixth attempt, and now her spawn will start spreading Diane Warren-inspired over-the-top light-pop vocals in about 16 years or so. Sigh. We can wait. source

U.S.: The controversial military rule on pregnancy lasted less than a week

  • Well, that didn’t last long, guys. It’s a Christmas miracle! Just days after news broke about Maj. Gen. Anthony Cucolo’s new rule on pregnant soldiers in Iraq, the policy was removed. The policy would’ve pushed a court-martial on any soldier who was pregnant while on duty, or impregnated a soldier on duty. Try explaining that one to civilians, and you see the problem. source

U.S.: The military’s genius new policy: Get pregnant, get court-martial

  • Whoops, the condom broke! I’m screwed! In a baffling decision clearly made by a man, soldiers under command of Gen. Anthony Cucolo in Iraq could face a court martial if they get – or get someone else – pregnant. “Anyone who leaves this fight earlier than the expected 12-month deployment creates a burden on their teammates,” Cucolo wrote. “Anyone who leaves this fight early because they made a personal choice that changed their medical status – or contributes to doing that to another – is not in keeping with a key element of our ethos.” An expert quoted in the article says the policy is legal, too, if controversial. In other news, if the Catholic Church could do this, they totally would. source

  • good Celine Dion has been trying to have a second baby, but it isn’t working out. She tried getting pregnant via in vitro fertilization, but it didn’t take.
  • bad However, this is not stopping her resolve. “But today, we are full of confidence. Celine is more determined than ever,” said husband René Angélil. source

Culture: O.J. Simpson’s ex, Christine Prody, sez he’s a bad human being

  • She wrote all about it in a new book. Prody says, beyond the cocaine, crime, pregnancy and abuse, he treated her like garbage. Without any income of her own to her name, he would get into fights with her and dump her out on the street miles from their home. He forced her to have an abortion – twice. He would get so possessive that he’d spy on phone records and emotionally wore her down. But the kicker, in our opinion, is this line: On a night she was wearing black, he told her, “Nicole wore black the night of her murder.” Wow. Who knows if this is all true, but W-O-W. source

U.S.: 150 years before abortionist George Tiller, there was Ann Lohman

  • Would your wives, and your sisters, and your daughters, if once absolved from fear, all become prostitutes? I cannot conceive how men who are husbands, brothers or fathers can give utterance to an idea so intrinsically base and infamous.
  • “Madame Restell” a.k.a. Ann Lohman • Who was infamous for performing abortion services in the mid-1800s, including a mail-order service that provided pills in newspaper ads which came with warnings that “miscarriage may occur.” As her clientele was often wealthy, she avoided significant jail time in an era when abortion was illegal, but after decades of harassment, she committed suicide in New York in 1978. There are parallels between Lohman’s case and George Tiller’s, obviously. • source
