Culture: Writer Jason Gay tackles the Saints’ “bounties” problem

  • As much as we’d all love football featuring clean, hard contact without dirty plays, that sounds a little like the magical cheeseburger tree.
  • Writer Jason Gay • Questioning the NFL’s efforts to make football safer for players, while recognizing that it would be virtually impossible to institute a system that dropped the injury rate to zero. The author’s comments came as part of a larger discussion of the role that violence plays in football, the commonality of defensive “bounties”, and what might be in store for football in the future as the league continues its renewed focus on the health and safety of players. Culture: Anderson Cooper on hot seat after teen guest’s skateboarding injury

  • Sometimes, standing in a foot of floodwater is easier than hosting a daytime talk show. This is a lesson “Anderson” learned the hard way, after a teenage guest on the CNN über-anchor’s daytime talk show put himself in a coma — by attempting to do some crazy skateboarding ahead of an appearance on the “Oprah” heir apparent. (They asked him to do so, because the show was about studying the teenage brain.) For what it’s worth, Anderson is somber about how things went: “I was very saddened to hear the news of this accident, and want to express my deepest concerns for the teenager who was injured,” he said. “I take this situation seriously, and my thoughts and prayers for his health, well-being and recovery are with him and his family.” But the real problem, of course, is that Anderson the journalist would never do something like put a kid in danger for ratings. How do you justify such a thing? source

Culture: “Spider-Man” play’s negative buzz keeps getting worse somehow

  • I have to weigh in on Spiderman. They should put Julie Taymor in jail for assault! I know what it’s like to fall and get hurt in front of 2,000 people. It’s no fun, but at least it was the one time it happened. I hope whoever was hurt is ok and sues the sh– out of Julie, Bono, Edge and every other a–hole who invested in that steaming pile of actor crippling sh–!
  • “Rent” star Adam Pascal • Expressing anger over the “Spider-Man” Broadway show, which has faced multiple injuries since it started its previews. As of right now, shows are getting cancelled to improve safety, and director Julie Taymor is fighting some pretty nasty PR. “An accident like this is obviously heartbreaking for our entire team and, of course, to me personally,” Taymor said in a statement. The actor injured in the most-recent incident, Christopher Tierney, is reportedly doing better, but the negative hype is definitely hurting the show. (By the way, since you asked, we do think Bono and The Edge should go to jail – but not for this.) source

U.S.: Harry Reid’s family gets to try out the health system, the hard way

  • His wife and daughter were seriously injured in a car wreck. Not that the Senate Majority Leader didn’t have a personal stake in health care before, but he now has a very direct one. His wife Landra and daughter Lana were injured after a truck rear-ended their car. Landra got the worst of it – a broken neck, broken back, and broken nose. His daughter injured her neck and suffered facial lacerations. Both should be OK, but their medical bills are gonna be freaking HUGE. Best wishes, guys. source

The incident drew a lot of attention last nights after early reports said that he died. Well, now it’s a bit more official. Sadly. source

Music: A harrowing account of the scary-sounding Weezer bus crash

  • I couldn’t believe what was happening in front of me, as Rivers lay so helpless, shivering in the center of the chaos, and meanwhile the sun was coming up and revealing an utterly beautiful light covering of snow on the surrounding trees.
  • Weezer band associate Karl Koch • Describing the scene as Rivers Cuomo was pulled out of the wreckage after a bus accident yesterday morning. The bus fell in such a way that the fridge fell out of its position and the front entrance was blocked by mud. The jaws of life were used to get the Weezer frontman out. Cuomo is resting comfortably in the hospital after suffering severe rib injuries. The band has canceled the rest of their 2009 tour dates as a result of the accident. Pull through, Rivers! source
