World: Falkland Islands still major sticking point for Britain, Argentina 30 years later

  • 1982 The United Kingdom went to war with Argentina over possession of the Falkland Islands, a land of roughly 3,000 people fairly close to Antartica, claimed to be possessed by each country. The war, which killed hundreds on each side, ended without a resolution of the islands’ ownership, but the two countries later rebuilt their diplomatic relationship.
  • 2012 As the 30th anniversary of the war approaches, the two countries are arguing about the Falklands again, with Argentinian President Cristina Fernandez accusing Britain of “militarizing the South Atlantic” and promising to complain to the United Nations, and British PM David Cameron saying that “The people of the Falklands choose to be British.” source

Biz: Futurist Ross Dawson: Newspapers dead in the U.S. by 2017

  • Leading futurist Ross Dawson has a message for you print jockeys out there: Find another medium that doesn’t involve dead trees. The dude created a handy-dandy chart explaining how we won’t read newspapers in the U.S. in another seven years. But on the plus side, if you’re a member of the Argentinian press, your papers will still be relevant into 2039. Food for thought. Plus this guy is a futurist which means he can see into the futureeeeeeeeeeee. oooh. source

U.S.: South Carolina police: Mark Sanford broke no laws with his tryst

  • What he did on his own personal time doesn’t require him to pay back anything. He did that for his own reasons. There was no legal requirement that he pay back any of that.
  • S.C. State Law Enforcement Division Director Reggie Lloyd • On Gov. Mark Sanford’s affair and whether or not he did anything wrong. Lloyd says, after an investigation, he did nothing wrong and in fact didn’t have to pay back any money for that business trip to Argentina he took – during which he had a free day where he was with his mistress. He’s getting called on to step down at the moment, but has avoided the pressure thus far. In other news, he’s a poster boy for why you shouldn’t use e-mail to have an extramarital affair. • source

Politics, U.S.: Mark Sanford’s wife, Jenny: “Not only will I survive, I’ll thrive.”

  • Am I O.K.? You know what? I have great faith and I have great friends and great family. We have a good Lord in this world, and I know I’m going to be fine. Not only will I survive, I’ll thrive.
  • Jenny Sanford • On her husband, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford’s, admission that he had been cheating on her with a woman in Argentina. She’s a strong individual just like Sanford. She is scorned woman. Hear her roar. • source

U.S.: Where in the world was Carmen Sandi … Mark Sanford? Argentina

  • Dude wasn’t in the Appalachians on Naked Hiking Day. This story had already taken a turn for the bizarre when we covered it yesterday, but now it’s switched from bizarre to awesome. South Carolina governor Mark Sanford, earlier reported to be chilling in the same spot as a buncha naked hikers, was instead chillin’ in Buenos Aires, Argentina – which just so happened to be the first place we looked for him. In other news, his Lt. Governor, Andre Bauer (sadly, not Andre Braugher) is fuming mad and wants to talk to Mr. Exotic RIGHT NOW AAARGH RAGE! source
