Politics: Chicago Sun-Times columnist calls bizarro hippies a “pity party”

  • My feeling was, heck, if staging public gripe fests gives these people something to do, then great. It’s outside. It involves handicrafts, the making of signs and costumes. It’s like Scouting for irked middle-aged white people.
  • Chicago Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg • In an often-hilarious takedown of the bizarro hippies. The article, written after he went to the Chicago Tax Day Bizarro Hippie Fest, notes that he attempted to talk to multiple people at the event only to see the protesters run away from him. He started conversations with phrases such as, “I’ve used tinfoil hats as metaphor, but I’ve never seen anyone actually wearing one …”, and later compared the bizarro hippie movement to the anti-interventionist America First movement around the time of World War II. As you might guess, the comment thread on this article is best to be avoided. source

Music: Scott Stapp of Creed relegated to singing about baseball

  • We’re pretty sure when he was singing the lyrics to “With Arms Wide Open,” this is exactly what he was thinking about when he said something about his life changing. We’re not sure what we love more about this – the clumsy baseball references, the fact that he sings about them the same way he does about Jesus, or the fact that this song probably paid his rent this month. source

Culture: Conan should consider second career as cockney Thom Yorke

  • He wants you to notice when you’re not around that he likes doing parody covers of Radiohead’s most famous guilty pleasure. It’s so ducking special. We wish we were special. source

Politics: John McCain knows the guy who made “Demon Sheep”

  • Well, that’s a clever twist on the whole campaign ad. An ad by the other side, mocking stuff the one guy said. It was clearly made with no money and liberally infringes on copyright. But it might be just what McCain needs to stay in the race.

Culture: Conan lets loose, has fun with his first live post-NBC show

  • I’m sure some of you heard I got a new job starting tomorrow: I’m the new manager of the Eugene Banana Republic.
  • Conan O’Brien • Speaking about his new TBS job at his first live show in Eugene, Oregon. Despite being banned from saying mean things about his old company NBC on TV, he said plenty of them live on stage. He also brought out the masturbating bear in a hood and said that, on the new show, he’d be called the “Self-Pleasuring Panda.” Oh Conan, we missed you! source

Culture: George Lopez wants Conan to know he’s wanted on TBS

  • Someone’s excited. George Lopez wanted to work with Conan O’Brien so badly that he pulled out one of his signature sketches last night. He also said this last night: “I want to say that I am completely 100% on board with this move. I talked to Conan on Wednesday and I talked to him last night and I said I welcome you into my deep loving embrace. Then I said let’s take the party and make it bigger and take it into the next generation of late-night TV.” Will it be the next generation? We have our fingers crossed. source

Politics: SNL reimagines Sarah Palin as Oprah, the network

  • If Sarah Palin had a cable network like this SNL performance suggests, it’d be great, because then we could completely avoid watching her.

Politics: Contract With America: Let’s call tea partiers “bizarro hippies”

  • Last night, a reader of ours made an astute observation. The Tea Party movement is doing a lot of damage to the memory of the old-school Boston Tea Party, which defined the start of our country. And it’s gonna be tough to wipe the movement away from the history. So, here’s our Contract With America. Let’s call the Tea Party Movement the “bizarro hippie movement.”
  • why? Because, much like the protest movement of the late 1960s, bizarro hippies meet up en masse, drive around crazy buses and rage about politics. Except the exact, bizarro opposite.
  • usage Use it as a non-proper noun. Example of usage: “Did you hear those bizarro hippies talking about slaying the Porkulus at Perkins the other day? One was wearing a ‘Palin 2012’ hat.”
  • next? From this post forward, ShortFormBlog will only call the Tea Party Movement by this name. We feel that our name is a better fit that best represents the movement’s historical context.

Culture: This just in: Tiger Woods thinks Tiger Woods sucks

  • We’ve been avoiding Tiger as much as humanly possible this week because we’re sick of talking about him, but this clip above is a good reason to acknowledge his existence. Keep that rage in check, bro. The whole world is watching.

Politics: Dear Alan Grayson: Acting like a jerk at Perkins kinda lame

  • The story behind the clipRep. Alan Grayson, perhaps the closest thing the Democratic party has to a left-leaning crazy, comes to a RNC meeting in Orlando and accuses them of spying. It turns into this big thing covered here on Fox News. Showing backbone is one thing, Alan, but this kinda gets to the point where you turn into the joke, man. Although we must say – never been much been fans of Perkins. We’re IHOP all the way, so at the very least, we support Alan’s yelling in that department. source
