Offbeat, U.S.: Was the cell phone really that important?

  • A woman dies after trying to retrieve one in her car. The scene took place in Fountain Valley, Calif., where the woman, out on Interstate 405, tried to grab the dropped cell phone while driving, crashed into a divider, got out of the car, and then got hit by another car passing by. Other people got injured, and she died, all because she couldn’t wait to get her cell phone. Sigh. source

U.S.: In the words of a man who witnessed the crash

  • I did not see any landing gear. I saw the underbelly of the plane fairly well. There was nothing burning on the plane and no physical damage. Nothing seemed wrong, except it was on a bad path.
  • Tony Tatro • A man who witnessed the plane crash while he was driving. He also noted that the plane was unusually loud before it crashed into a home in Clarence Center, N.Y., outside of Buffalo • source

U.S.: Just awful: Man dragged under car nearly 20 miles, dies.

  • It happened in Queens, N.Y. The man, unidentified but between his mid-20s and 30s, was hit by one car whose driver went back to the scene of the crime and couldn’t find him. That’s because he was then hit by another driver who didn’t see him. That driver dragged him under the carriage of his van for 19.8 miles. The injuries, we won’t even begin to describe. But just imagine the worst – the article uses the phrase “torn-up corpse.” We wish his family condolences in the wake of this sad news. source

U.S.: Jesus. That company knew it was shipping tainted peanut butter.

  • *Forehead slap* According to the FDA, the Georgia peanut plant at the center of the goober salmonella outbreak knew as far back as 2007 that the peanuts it was shipping tested positive for the bacteria. Even so, it kept shipping them until a second test confirmed the first test’s suspicions, and even after THAT, allowed the tainted product to get sold. source

  • And yeah. People got sick. Peanut Corp. of America made a lot of people sick due to its actions. On top of the 575 illnesses in 43 states, eight people have died from eating tainted peanut butter. On top of that dramarama, over 1,550 products were recalled. Oh, and they caused a national scare that made me afraid of eating my favorite food. *grumble* source

Music: Another type of groundhog, Sid Vicious, died 30 years ago today

  • I can’t drink, I can’t, like the doctor said if I drank anything even remotely like the way I’ve been drinking for the past however long, I’ve got six months at the absolute outside to live.
