Culture: Natasha Richardson’s life cut short by a freak skiing accident

  • She seemed OK at first, then got much, much worse. Richardson, the wife of Liam Neeson and daughter of Vanessa Redgrave, had a fall during a beginner’s skiing accident at a Quebec resort on Monday, initially seemed OK, then declined quickly, the victim of a head injury. She was 45. Richardson’s family, in a statement, asked “for privacy during this very difficult time.” source

  • Tonight we’ll be putting the paper to bed for the last time. But the bloodline will live on.
  • Editor and Publisher Roger Oglesby • During the announcement, which was made today. As you might imagine, it wasn’t exactly a fun day for them today. • source

Politics, World: Dear Zimbabwe prez Robert Mugabe: Leave Morgan alone!

  • I’m skeptical about any motor vehicle accident in Zimbabwe involving an opposition figure. President Mugabe has a history of strange car accidents when someone lo and behold dies – it’s sort of his M.O. of how they get rid of people they don’t like.
  • Tom McDonald • the U.S. ambassador to Zimbabwe from 1997-2001, on the recent crash involving prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai, the opposition party leader in the power-sharing government with president Robert Mugabe. This gives us pause, too. • source

World: Zimbabwe PM Morgan Tsvangirai’s wife killed in car wreck

  • What happened? The car carrying Morgan Tsvangirai, an aide and his wife Susan got into a head-on collision with a truck. They were carrying the opposition leader to Buhera, Tsvangirai’s hometown. Tsvangirai, the aide and the driver were seriously hurt, but they are not discussing the extent of the injuries as of yet – hopefully it’s not too bad. source

  • Why this might be bad Zimbabwe is a country that can’t seem to get a break. The government, long led by president and hyperinflation expert Robert Mugabe, recently brought Tsvangirai on as prime minister. And that whole process hasn’t been without its drama. So while there’s no evidence of foul play yet, it wouldn’t be surprising. source

U.S.: Courtroom chaos: A judge attacked, a defendant shot dead

  • Whoa! That’s crazy! What happened? During a murder trial in Stockton, Calif., the defendant, accused of murdering his girlfriend, apparently became agitated and attacked the judge during a recess, called after the defendant’s mother stormed out of the courtroom. David Paradiso started punching the judge, and deputies shot at him, killing him. Whew. Talk about scary. source

World: Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir charged with war crimes

  • He is suspected of being criminally responsible … for intentionally directing attacks against an important part of the civilian population of Darfur, Sudan; murdering, exterminating, raping, torturing, and forcibly transferring large numbers of civilians, and pillaging their property.
  • International Criminal Court spokesman Laurence Blairon • On Omar al-Bashir, who is the first sitting president to be charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity. In the six-year conflict, nearly 300,000 Darfuris have died. • source

Culture: David Foster Wallace’s failed struggle with the written word

  • What goes on inside is just too fast and huge and all interconnected for words to do more than barely sketch the outlines of at most one tiny little part of it at any given instant.
  • Author David Foster Wallace • From a 2001 short story. Wallace died last year after committing suicide. His unfinished third novel, “The Pale King,” will come out next year, but an excerpt is available at The New Yorker Web site. On a side note, this linked article would require 800 ShortFormBlog posts to do justice; it’s freaking huge. • source
