U.S.: Senator Bob Corker: OnStar saved my daughter’s car!

  • I was telling the lady who handles that for me in Chattanooga, each month I was saying, ‘I don’t want to pay this, I don’t want to pay this.’ … Certainly it paid off tremendously last night.
  • Sen. Bob Corker • Describing how OnStar helped him get his daughter Julia’s car back after it was jacked from her on the mean streets of D.C. Wednesday night. The Tennessee Republican chose to keep the $18-a-month service, which came in handy when it helped police find the suspects – and the vehicle – at a Taco Bell in Seat Pleasant, Maryland. Dudes, you’re supposed to run for the border, but you’re not supposed to just stop there! source

U.S.: The Moonies fire the non-crazy part of the Washington Times staff

  • Our circulation sucks. Let’s kill the paper! In a hack and slash maneuver with negative ramifications for tons of journalists, the Times has announced layoffs of 40% of their staff. They also plan to trim the paper back significantly and focus on the right-leaning chatter that has earned the paper a circulation that’s only a fraction of the size of The Washington Post. Is less sports and more crazy the answer? We’ll find out. source

U.S.: D.C. socialites Tareq and Michaele Salahi step up their state dinner game

statedinner1125

  • These people are officially the greatest showboat reality-tv-whore badasses ever. Tareq and Michaele Salahi totally crashed the White House’s state dinner last night, and they did it in a blatant way, with Facebook photos, time with Rahm Emanuel (above) and no security clearance. Who knows how they got in; we wanna know what they’re gonna get out of it. source

U.S.: Dear Catholic Church: Stop playing politics with social services

  • This is absolute crap. And unfair to D.C. Taking care of its large gay community, the District of Columbia’s is about to vote on a law that will recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere. But the Catholic Church is trying to leverage its power over the city – providing thousands with services such as adoption and feeding the homeless – to try to stop the law. If the law passes, they say, they’ll stop providing these services. This is crap. It’s also not Christian. Churches should not play politics like this, because they’ll burn people who don’t deserve to get caught in the flames. source

  • Why did he crack? The best explanation we have so far? Nidal Malik Hasan, a single 39-year-old who was recently promoted to Major, was angry that he had to go to Iraq. The place he shot up was used to prepare soliders to deploy. Other suspects are in custody as well. Evidence does NOT point to terrorism. source

Politics: Who had the iconic line of the National Equality March? Lady Gaga

  • Obama, I know you are listening. Are you listening? We will continue to push you and your administration to bring your words of promise to a reality.
  • Lady Gaga • Speaking before a huge crowd of gay-rights supporters in Washington D.C. today. She didn’t have to put on her poker face, or tell the crowd, “Just Dance.” She made a passionate, smart push for gay rights at today’s march. We’re impressed. So impressed that we’ll avoid making the joke about her that we usually make when we post about her on the blog.  • source

Sports: Dear Redskins coach Jim Zorn: You suck. The Lions love you.

  • Well, there’s not many words to say yet, We did not treat this team lightly. We knew this team was good. They came in and got out ahead, but we certainly were not out of the game.
  • Washington Redskins coach Jim Zorn • On losing to the freaking Detroit Lions, giving what’s possibly the worst team in football history its first win in nearly two seasons. He’s right. The Redskins were in it, never more than two touchdowns away from the lead, but they also never had the lead in the game. Zorn is on guillotine watch in D.C. tonight. • source

U.S.: Never a dull moment in D.C.: Guy shot, killed near Capitol

  • Whew. Just another average day in the District. A block away from the Capitol, a dude gets stopped for a routine traffic stop. He flees in his getaway car of choice – a white Mercedes – and hits a cop in the process, injuring him. He then drives into a police cruiser, gets out, and is cornered by police, who tell him to put down his weapon. He doesn’t do it, and is shot and killed. Like we said. Just another average day in the District.source

U.S.: Marion Barry, arrested for stalking? Wow. That’s … expected.

  • What happened? The former D.C. mayor, traveling by car in Anacostia Park, was arrested after a woman claimed his car was trailing hers. It was unclear what, if any, relationship the two have. He’ll be in court later this week. source

  • A storied history Barry, currently a council member, is famous for the amount of crazy stuff that’s happened to him, from crack cocaine arrests to tax evasion. Somehow, he still gets elected. He is currently on probation. source
