Tech: AOL’s “You’ve Got News”: The reason you should switch to Chrome

  • In case you’re wondering what the coolest app on the Chrome Web Store is, it’s AOL’s semi-belated entry into the tablet-esque news reader app market. You’ve Got News, a riff on their legacy branding, has a really slick feel and reminds you exactly how much content AOL has on its many news sites. Why isn’t this on the iPad yet, guys? It’s amazing. source

Tech: Mozilla dude on Apple’s HTML5 demos: “Not intellectually honest”

  • Apple’s messaging is clearly meant to say ‘hey, we love the web’ but the actual demos they have and the fact that actively block other browsers from those demos don’t match their messaging. It’s not intellectually honest at all.
  • Mozilla evangelist Christopher Blizzard • Regarding a series of technical demos Apple put on their site to test HTML5. While the demos are cool – we particularly dig the font one – we were surprised to find out that the demos didn’t work on Firefox OR Chrome, despite the fact that most of the features were supported by both browsers. In case you don’t want to change browsers but want to test out the technology, here’s a version without the Steve-block. They still work, guys, strangely enough. source

Tech: Google underestimates the uses of Chrome’s “Incognito Mode”

  • For times when you want to browse in stealth mode, for example, to plan surprises like gifts or birthdays, Google Chrome offers the incognito browsing mode.
  • A note on the Google Chrome help page • Regarding the site’s incognito mode, which allows one to hide their browsing habits from their cache. This is hilarious, because everyone knows the feature’s in there to hide people’s porn browsing habits. It’s possible, though, that the surprise gift might be porn. source

Tech: Could the upcoming version of Firefox look like this?

The current trend is to put the tabs above the location bar. Safari does it. So does Chrome. Firefox is considering it for version 4. Should they? source

Tech: Next on Google’s list? A new operating system based on Chrome

  • Windows is screwed. Tonight, Google announced to the world that they’re launching a new Web-leaning OS that will lean on netbooks at first but is also targeted towards desktop PCs. The idea is that it’s a simple OS for people who largely live on the Web. They plan to open-source the software later this year and hope to have something to show for their hard work by the middle of next year.
  • What about Android? We know you’re thinking – doesn’t Google have Android already? Well, yeah. But Google doesn’t mind. “While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap,” writes VP Sundar Pichai, “we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google.” So yeah. We expect Windows to go the way of IE’s market share in about five years. source

  • It’s like the Blue Man Group turned into superheroes who try to protect people from sketchiness. The visual representation of phishing and malware is awesome, BTW. source
