U.S.: California’s next assembly speaker is blazing Harvey Milk’s trail

  • Democrat John Perez is in line to be the first gay assembly speaker, anywhere, ever. Perez won a show of support from the California state assembly today – a big deal, as that position holds a lot of power. Perez will be on the front lines of the state’s budget crisis, which is expected to last until at least – get this – 2015. He also has a pedigree, too: His cousin is Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who was also an assembly speaker back in the day. Good for you, bro. source

Biz: Idiots at the Upland, Calif. Wal-Mart: Way to be bad shoppers/human beings

  • This was without a doubt the worst I’ve ever seen it. They wouldn’t let people line up. They were belligerent. They just bombarded the store.

They had to close the store for three hours this morning because people were ripping up merchandise, fighting and generally being crazy. You know, there are better ways to get deals than this. source

Offbeat: Dear middle schoolers: Stop beating redheads ’cause they’re different

  • The beating was tied back to Facebook. A group of seventh and eighth graders at A.E. Wright Middle School in Calabasas, Calif. decided to take out their ginger rage on a poor 12-year-old twice in one day. Investigators tied the attack to a Facebook page claiming that Friday was “Kick a Ginger Day.” While the kid wasn’t seriously injured, there are better sources of inspiration than South Park. source
