Offbeat: A new kind of folk hero: Watch “Epic Beard Man” do his thang

  • (* note: graphic video *) It’s perhaps a great commentary on our society that a video of an old dude beating up another dude can become a phenomenon of the first order. But this clip isn’t even the first for Thomas Brusso, who was also involved in a tasering incident at an Oakland A’s game last Summer. Spike TV also has an interview with the dude. If nothing else, the beard lives up to the legend.  source

Offbeat: Dear middle schoolers: Stop beating redheads ’cause they’re different

  • The beating was tied back to Facebook. A group of seventh and eighth graders at A.E. Wright Middle School in Calabasas, Calif. decided to take out their ginger rage on a poor 12-year-old twice in one day. Investigators tied the attack to a Facebook page claiming that Friday was “Kick a Ginger Day.” While the kid wasn’t seriously injured, there are better sources of inspiration than South Park. source

Culture: The album art game: Rihanna looks much better than Chris Brown

rihannabrown1105
  • Rihanna’s cover OK, let’s say you’re a pop star who was all over the press for about six months because your famous boyfriend attacked you violently. It creates some dark times in your life (especially after the post-beating PHOTO of you got leaked). How do you promote your next album? With a dark, two-tone cover and a scorned woman look. Dear Rihanna: Your PR people are awesome.
  • Chris Brown’s cover OK, let’s say you’re a pop star who was all over the press for about six months because you beat your famous girlfriend. It makes millions of people critical of you. How do you promote your next album? Looking like the Black Ziggy Stardust trying to recreate the “Space Jam” film poster on the set for the Michael/Janet Jackson “Scream” video. Dear Chris: Your PR people suck. source

U.S.: Is Derrion Albert’s death a tipping point for school violence?

Screencaps from Darrion Albert's murder

It's a hard video to watch. (Watch it here, but note that it's very graphic.) It's a situation that you'll likely never be in. But in Chicago, it's a way of life. Derrion Albert's death is not the first nor the last to happen in and around the public school system, but it could be a tipping point.
  • Derrion Albert Albert, an honors student, got caught in the middle of a gang fight just blocks away from his school, where a separate incident happened earlier that day. He was kicked and beaten with a plank, and he died on the scene. But someone caught it on a camera phone, a video that allowed Chicago police to identify the suspects. Four have been charged.
  • This was not isolated Let’s be honest here: Albert’s death is getting much more attention because of the YouTube-friendly video. But it’s attention that can be harnessed. 290 students were injured last year in gun-related incidents in Chicago, and gang fights like the one shown in the video are common. The page-one play of this story could help the city turn a corner.
  • Social mediaAs Albert’s death becomes a touchstone for Chicago schools, it’s important to note the video’s impact. Like the texting-while-driving PSA from a month ago, this video stays with you. It’s as strong a deterrent against gang violence as any, because the world doesn’t need more Derrion Alberts. Chicago needs safer schools and safer streets. Will that happen? source

U.S.: Milwaukee proves that pipe beatings are making a comeback

  • That’s what made Milwaukee famous? The mayor of Milwaukee learned last night that doing nice things for people can end up in tears. After chilling at the Wisconsin State Fair, Mayor Tom Barrett heard a woman screaming, and went to help her. Instead, he got beat by a man with a lead pipe. What is this, River City Ransom? Barrett was in stable condition in the hospital, while the 20-year-old who did this to him was arrested. You know, we could use fewer pipe beatings, not more. source
