Tech: Scientists claim to have found the “Homer Simpson gene” in mice

  • A big question this research raises is why would we, or mice, have a gene that makes us less smart – a Homer Simpson gene? I believe that we are not really seeing the full picture.
  • Emory University professor John Hepler, PhD • Regarding the research he’s done which shows that mice get smarter if you take a certain gene out of them. The RGS14 gene turns off a certain part of the brain, the CA2 region, and many scientists aren’t sure what it’s for. However, when they turned off the gene in mice, they suddenly had much stronger mental abilities. Neat. source

Tech: Heavy cell phone use kills Alzheimer’s … in mice. Uh, OK.

  • We wonder what the mice talked about on their miniature cell phones. In one of the odder scientific studies to come out of the woodwork of late, scientists say that they found that exposing mice to electromagnetic radiation similar to cell phones reversed the effects of an animal version of Alzheimer’s disease. Did we accidentally solve the Alzheimer’s disease puzzle by talking on our iPhones? Whoa. That’s weird. source

U.S.: Could this be the elusive cure to the flu?

  • One treatment to prevent them all. An experimental flu treatment kills multiple strains at once in mice, says the journal Nature Structural and Molecular Biology. The treatment, made from human proteins, managed to kill such strains as bird flu and the 1918 strain that caused an epidemic. But will it work on humans? We’ll find out as soon as the 2010-2011 flu season, when human trials could begin. source
