Politics: The Prop. 8 trial, day one: Pullin’ out the Twinkie Offense

  • [It’s] like putting a Twinkie at the end of a treadmill and saying, ‘You can only have a bite.’ And you want the whole thing. … All I want is to be married.
  • Plaintiff Paul Katami • Using perhaps the strangest metaphor we’ve ever heard to explain the benefits of gay marriage over civil unions. Katami has been with his partner, Jeffrey Zarrillo, for nine years. This line of arguing is downright strange for a lot of reasons, the biggest being “The Twinkie Defense,” which was used by the lawyer for Dan White, who was charged with killing gay-rights icon (and recent biopic subject) Harvey Milk. U.S.: California’s next assembly speaker is blazing Harvey Milk’s trail

  • Democrat John Perez is in line to be the first gay assembly speaker, anywhere, ever. Perez won a show of support from the California state assembly today – a big deal, as that position holds a lot of power. Perez will be on the front lines of the state’s budget crisis, which is expected to last until at least – get this – 2015. He also has a pedigree, too: His cousin is Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who was also an assembly speaker back in the day. Good for you, bro. source

U.S.: Obama hands out Presidential Medal of Freedom to 16 famous peeps

  • Talk about vip. Obama announced the 16 recipients of the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom today. Among those to get America’s highest civilian honor: Stephen Hawking, Ted Kennedy, Harvey Milk and Sidney Poitier. I know, right? Pretty exclusive. We have to keep working on that cure for cancer, then maybe we’ll have a chance. source

Culture: Oscar quote of the night: Best Actor, Sean Penn

  • You commie homo-loving sons of guns. I did not expect this, and I wanted to be very clear that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me, often. But I am touched by the appreciation.
  • Sean Penn • on winning the best actor award for “Milk.” OK, it wasn’t as good as Mickey Rourke’s speech last night, but we’ll give him credit for saying something funny. • source
