World: North Korea is looking to avert a revolution

  • fear North Korea seems afraid of a revolution similar to those we’ve seen in the Middle East. They bought a lot of anti-riot gear from China, and there’s been extra police forces around. But where do the revolutions usually start? With the kids in college.
  • reaction North Korea has closed all of their universities until April 2012, blaming it on their ailing economy — all the students have to go work in factories. This might be true, but more than likely it’s not — they’re trying to keep those most likely to revolt from doing it. source

U.S.: Bob McDonnell smartly pulls back his hand on gay rights

  • stupid Virginia’s attorney general, Ken Cuccinelli II, orders state universities to remove language from their anti-discrimination codes protecting gays and lesbians, saying only the state legislature can do that. People are PISSED.
  • better Hoping to quell the landmine Cuccinelli just stepped in, Gov. Bob McDonnell issues a directive saying that discrimination against gay and lesbian state employees is prohibited, and he’ll fire anyone he catches. It’s a good start.

Biz: Bud Light’s “fan can”: Wearing team colors like a fairweather fan

  • idea Bud Light, which may as well be water, came up with this “Fan Can” idea to market beers in team colors just as college football season was starting up. Why support one team when you can support the whole Big Ten?
  • response The FTC isn’t keen on Bud’s idea, because it may lead to underage drinking. (Uh, whatever.) The schools themselves are ticked because the colors make it seem like they’re supporting crappy light beer. So are we. source
