Culture: KFC’s Aussie branch treads fine line between chicken and racism

  • Bad advertising idea No. 1: “Stuck in a situation where you’re surrounded by black/West Indian people? Just offer them chicken and everything will be OK!” KFC, as you might guess, is getting a firestorm of controversy for this Australian ad. Ouch. source

Politics: Corny country comic Ray Stevens is still around, still sucks

  • 36 years ago, this guy was responsible for one of the cheesiest, corniest songs to ever become a No. 1 pop hit, “The Streak.” (In his defense, Owl City’s blatant Postal Service rip-off “Fireflies” might be cornier and cheesier.) Since then, he’s maintained a cult audience, but in recent years, he’s taken to releasing topical country “comedy” songs about current events, with a far rightward lean. This one, “We the People,” threatens congressmen who vote for health care. And it has a million views on YouTube. Who are these million viewers, and what are they doing searching for “Ray Stevens” on YouTube? It’s not even funny!

Music: Chris Cornell, sensing a musical dead-end, reunites Soundgarden

  • Remember these guys? Of course you do. The first shot in the Grunge revolution, Soundgarden, plans to reunite in 2010, according to Billboard. And just in time, too. Lead singer Chris Cornell has had a post-Soundgarden career that’s among the worst in rock music, including these missteps:
  • moody Cornell’s first solo album, “Euphoria Morning,” was way closer to Jeff Buckley’s sound than Soundgarden.
  • super Cornell then turned most of the members of Rage Against the Machine into mush with Audioslave.
  • sleepy Cornell’s second solo disc, “Carry On,”  was worse than Audioslave and had a boring “Billie Jean” cover.
  • wtf?? Cornell then made “Scream,” one of 2009’s worst records, with Timbaland. Atone for your sins! source

Culture: This weekend was huge for the box office, with lots of hits

  • $75M the take of “Avatar,” which led the pack and held on for its second weekend
  • $65M the take of 2nd-place Robert Downey Jr.’s take on “Sherlock Holmes”
  • $50M the take of crap machine “Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Squeakuel” source

Offbeat: Marijuana cookie tragedy: A pro-pot advocate’s huge mistake

  • This story ends tragically, FYI. 🙁 A week after making pot-laced cookies for her 3-year-old grandson (at which point he had to go to the hospital), Erin Marcove committed suicide. Marcove, 44, was a huge advocate for medical marijuana in the Denver area. She made a cookie for the boy, who has since recovered, using “cannabis butter” – peanut butter mixed with marijuana – as the main ingredient. Awful. And awfully sad. source

Offbeat: Ben & Arthur: The worst film we’ve ever seen. God, it’s bad.

  • Next time you watch a film and claim it’s the worst ever, don’t forget “Ben & Arthur.” Shot on an almost nonexistent budget with actors who have nonexistent acting abilities, this piece of gay-themed cinema (which, by the way, plays the “gay” card a bit too heavyhandedly and in hilarious ways) holds a spot in the Top 10 of IMDB’s Bottom 100 – and deservedly so. Sam Mraovich, the director and main actor, is largely at fault for the awfulness. Fortunately, it’s the kind of awful you can laugh at. So laugh, guys, laugh. source

Culture: The plot twist to end all plot twists. It’s BEYOND laughably bad.

  • On The CW’s stalwart “One Tree Hill,” a major plot point involves a major organ. We won’t reveal anything else other than to say you need to watch the video. source

Culture: Anyone hate babies as much as we do? If so, don’t watch this trailer

  • It’s like “Look Who’s Talking” for the indie set. A documentary on babies shot in four different global locales, this movie strikes us as kinda cute in that rip-hair-out-our-skulls kind of way. Two minutes of this is OK, but could you imagine an hour and a half of these babies?

Offbeat: The worst version of national anthem we’ve ever heard in our lives

  • Oh, say, can you fix our speakers (and eardrums) after being forced to listen to this godawful rendition of the National Anthem? This goes beyond being bad and into a realm of violence against the listener.
