Tech: These colorful blocks represent the fastest supercomputers

  • This may be one of the coolest infographics we’ve ever seen. This interactive work splits the relative speed of a bunch of supercomputers up a number of ways – by speed, by OS, by country – and looks awesome. Linux pretty much owns this market, by the way, and IBM and Intel have their fingers in the mix the most, although AMD, HP and Cray hold their own. source

Offbeat: @BPGlobalPR: A @FakeAPStylebook for the Gulf oil spill

  • Oh man, this whole time we’ve been trying to stop SEAWATER from gushing into our OIL. Stupid Terry was holding the diagram upside down.
  • A tweet by @BPGlobalPR • Which, in the span of 57 tweets, has managed to capture the imagination of 15,000 Twitter users worldwide with an often hilarious parody of one of the worst oil spills on record, and the major oil company’s inept response. We wish we could be so hilarious that @Alyssa_Milano says that our tweets are awesome. And also so that we’d respond like this: “We’ve been told @Alyssa_Milano loves our tweets. I guess that officially makes us the boss. #bpcares #bpistheboss.” A blog can dream, can’t it? source

Music: These budding Deerhunter fans are more talented than we are

  • As some of you may know, one of of favorite bands is Bradford Cox’s Deerhunter, one of the more ambitious, experimental acts out there. And these kids above, well, just nailed their most well-known song. We’re not talking like knowing three chords. No. We’re talking the bass part on the intro that hooks you in. We’re talking the distortion. We’re talking the dueling guitar solos at the end of the song. It’s the kind of performance that makes music fans like us realize exactly how mediocre we actually are. Yeah, we’re pretty mediocre.

Politics: Dale Peterson carries a big gun, says whatever the hell he wants

  • Key quote (as he pulls out a rifle): “We’re Republicans, we should be better than that.” Dale Peterson, who’s running for a fairly random state position in Alabama, has been getting a lot of attention for this this ad, which seems to fit absolutely every cliche of the current GOP. It’s not ironic. Well, at least we don’t think it is. Someone actually made a “Chuck Norris Facts”-style parody site for Peterson, and Peterson linked to it on his campaign site. Nice. source

Culture: William Shatner born for “#(@& My Dad Says” sitcom

  • We say spit; why can’t we say *#@(? #*&* is a very natural function of the body. We shouldn’t discard it.
  • “(#(& My Dad Says” star William Shatner • Regarding what the very middle-American CBS should call the show (it’s still under debate). So yeah, this quote kinda ranks up there with the tweets. It’d be fair to say that this could be pretty freaking awesome when it finally hits the air. source

Tech: Rube Goldberg would be proud of this Google Chrome ad

  • OMG OMG THAT’S FAST! This Google Chrome ad was shot using a 2700 fps camera to show how fast the rendering speed of the pages were. And in every case used here, it was faster than lightning. This advertising campaign is nothing but win. source

Music: Scott Stapp of Creed relegated to singing about baseball

  • We’re pretty sure when he was singing the lyrics to “With Arms Wide Open,” this is exactly what he was thinking about when he said something about his life changing. We’re not sure what we love more about this – the clumsy baseball references, the fact that he sings about them the same way he does about Jesus, or the fact that this song probably paid his rent this month. source

Offbeat: Let’s face it: This guy’s beard is more impressive than yours

Slate has this killer gallery of beards up today, and as you might suspect, Julius is getting a little jealous. See, robots can’t grow facial hair. source

Culture: Conan should consider second career as cockney Thom Yorke

  • He wants you to notice when you’re not around that he likes doing parody covers of Radiohead’s most famous guilty pleasure. It’s so ducking special. We wish we were special. source
