U.S.: Jindal’s volcano remark: An erupting dramabomb

  • $140 million? Necessary? Uh, yeah, dude. Last night, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal made a critical comment about an appropriation in the stimulus bill for “volcano monitoring” during his rebuttal to President Obama’s speech. But locals near major volcanoes say the money is necessary to prepare for natural disasters – something critics say Jindal should know about, given his state’s recent history with Hurricane Katrina. Plus, the money would create jobs, one expert notes. Jindal isn’t backing down, though. source

  • The Chronicle’s screwed The San Francisco Chronicle, one of the largest papers in the country, has been bleeding money for years. It lost a modest $50 million last year. Yesterday, it told its staff that it either must cut costs significantly, including workers, or it will die. At the least, it will probably sell. source

Jindal seemed to come out of nowhere this week to become the Figure Sarah Palin Should Have Been for the Republicans, with his response to Barack Obama’s speech cementing his face in the American consciousness. If you’re wondering who this dude is, check out this Esquire article from October, which goes into detail about the things that shaped his personality and beliefs.
