Sports: Brett Favre accepts his fate as a retired guy in Mississippi

  • It was the hardest decision I’ve ever made. I didn’t feel like physically I could play at a level that was acceptable. I would like to thank everyone, including the Packers, Jets and Vikings – but, most importantly, the fans.
  • Quarterback Brett Favre • Describing his decision to stay retired as opposed to trying to play for the Minnesota Vikings. Favre is kind of an old guy and has already retired twice, only to return once and nearly return a second time. Regarding the surgery that he went through in hopes of coming back, he says he realized it was time. “I have legitimate reasons for my decision,” he said. “I’m 39 with a lot of sacks to my name.” • source

Sports: Armstrong and Contador confirm that the hate doesn’t stop in Paris

  • My relationship with Armstrong
is nil. He’s a great champion, and he had a great race in this Tour, but it’s something else on a personal level, where I’ve never had a great admiration for him, and I never will.
  • 2009 Tour de France winner Alberto Contador • On how he feels about his teammate, seven-time winner Lance Armstrong. But wait, it gets better. Armstrong responded on his Twitter, saying, “if I were him I’d drop this drivel and start thanking his team. Without them, he doesn’t win.” Oh SNAP!  • source

Politics, Sports: Is the NFL kicking Michael Vick when he’s down?

  • A man just spent two years in a federal penitentiary, but for Goodell — the commissioner of a sport in which a grown man runs around with a ball until someone else tackles him to the ground — doing real, hard time wasn’t enough.
  • ESPN.com columnist Howard Bryant • In a scathing criticism of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s handling of the Michael Vick saga. As opposed to just letting the man play after years of suspension and two years of jail, Goodell tacked another suspension on top of that. Regarding the possibility that Goodell could actually extend the suspension, Bryant says, “There is something childish and vindictive and personal about this, and that is the secondary, more sinister element in the ruling.” • source

Politics, Sports: PETA grabs onto Michael Vick’s collar, doesn’t plan to let go

  • He has served his reduced sentence, but no child should ever look up to Vick as a role model. And for the sake of all the young football fans and all the dogs he electrocuted, drowned, slammed to the ground, and hanged, we are going to watch him like a hawk.
  • A statement from PETA • Regarding the release and conditional reinstatement of Michael Vick, which we’re sure will mean weeks of additional entertainment from animal rights group. SEA KITTENS WHAT?! (Disclosure: When we were laid off, we considered applying for a job with PETA, as we’re longtime vegetarians and are such for animal rights reasons. Plus, PETA is located in our adopted hometown of Norfolk, Va. But just because we have some positive opinions of what they stand for doesn’t mean we’ll agree with their means.) • source

Sports: Lance Armstrong isn’t used to losing, but acts like a good sport

  • I wanted to come in first, but sometimes in sports there’s somebody that’s better.
  • Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong • On how he felt about his third-place finish Sunday. His teammate, Spain’s Alberto Contador, claimed first place and his second yellow jersey in three years. • source

Sports: Possibly headed to jail for shooting himself in the leg: Plaxico Burress

  • Plaxico Burress, the New York Giants’ star wide receiver, shoots himself in the leg at a NYC nightclub. Everyone laughs at him. source
  • The police checks back on his record and realizes – *light bulb* – his concealed weapon permit was out-of-state and expired. source
  • Prosectors want to send Burress to jail for all this. Isn’t the idiocy of a self-inflicted gunshot wound punishment enough? source

Sports: Michael Vick can at least count on Terrell Owens’ support

  • The Michael Vick situation, I think, is unfortunate. I think the way the commissioner is handling it is unfair to Michael Vick. I think he’s done the time for what he’s done. I don’t think it’s really fair for him to be suspended four more games. It’s almost like kicking a dead horse in the ground.
  • Brash NFL icon Terrell Owens • Sounding pretty intelligent in arguing against a further suspension for Michael Vick, who went to jail for his ties to a dog-fighting operation. Owens, currently a Buffalo Bill, feels that the players’ union needs to step in and give Vick their support as he tries to return to the NFL and put the situation behind him. • source

Sports: Hank Aaron: Give those juiced-up bastards asterisks

  • The thing is, do you put these guys in, or do you put an asterisk beside their names and say, ‘Hey, they did it, but here’s why?’ To be safe, that’s the only way I see that you can do it.
  • Legendary slugger Hank Aaron • Regarding what he feels should be done about record-breaking players (ahem *Barry Bonds* ahem) who use steroids. Aaron spoke at Cooperstown yesterday, where base-stealing phenom Rickey Henderson and former Red Sox superstar Jim Rice got inducted into the Hall of Fame. • source
