Culture: Sounds about right: The mom squealed in the “Balloon Boy” case

  • Both parents told their kids to lie. Good job. The Balloon Boy story now has even more hot air to feed itself, thanks to the acquisition of a search warrant by the Fort Collins Coloradan which straight-up broke open the case. The warrant claims that Mayumi Heene admitted that she and her husband lied about what happened, and that they told their kids to lie. And even further, they did it to further their 15 seconds of fame. All obvious points, but now we know who the whistleblower was. source

Culture: Whatever happened to Soupy Sales? Well, he’s dead.

  • Guess that solves that problem. Soupy Sales, born Milton Supman, died at 83. An iconic television figure from the ’50s through the ’70s, he took more than 20,000 pies to the face during his career. Which is approximately two or three more than we’ve taken since we started running ShortFormBlog. RIP Soupy Sales.source

Culture: New York: Please stop making examples of celebrities like Lil Wayne

  • First Plaxico, now the rap star. Not cool. Thanks in part to New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, the state has some of the strictest laws on the books when it comes to gun possession. Plaxico Burress at least shot off his gun before he got a two-year jail sentence for gun possession. Unfortunately for Lil Wayne, though, he was nicked with “attempted gun possession” and will face as much as a year. As a non-resident of the state, he was unaware of the law, but simply being unaware of the law is not a good enough reason. Not that we’re suggesting he should’ve been in possession of the gun, but jail time for this is unbelievable. For shame, New York state. source

Culture: Improv Everywhere is at the grocery store, being awesome again

  • Somehow, Improv Everywhere has managed to take an idea – comedy in public places – and make it a truly immaculate thing that’s evolved over time. They went from simply dressing up like Best Buy employees to creating elaborate performance pieces like this. That’s impressive.source

Culture: If anyone believed “RIP Kanye West” was true, pity on you fools

  • Its in extreme poor taste to have that as a trendy topic. It’s totally disrespectful to make up a story like this where all human
  • Kanye West’s girlfriend, Amber Rose • Discussing on Twitter how her oft-discussed boyfriend is, in fact, still alive. So why’s “RIP Kanye West” trending? Blame 4chan, which you would expect to come up with something like this. I mean, come on, why would Kanye die? It’s way too obvious, guys. Pick a more interesting target next time. • source

Culture: Lifetime stays classy, pulls the Balloon Boy “Wife Swap” episode

  • A while ago, Lifetime scheduled an episode of “Wife Swap,” featuring a wacky storm-chasing family, to air on Thursday. source
  • Since then, the Heene family has been on TV around the clock after perpetrating the “Balloon Boy” hoax last week. source
  • Rather than give them even more time on TV, Lifetime pulled the episode. Good job. This family needs no more press. source

Culture: Roman Polanski, a “high flight risk”? Pssh, whatever!

  • Guess he’s not leaving jail anytime soon. The director who famously skipped out on statutory rape charges by moving to France won’t be able to try a similar trick in Switzerland. The Swiss court has chosen not to allow the director bail due to his long history of, uh, moving to countries where he can’t get extradited. And as you might guess, Polanski is depressed and in an “unsettled state of mind” behind bars. source

Culture: “Jeopardy” fail: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar airballs easy question

  • Kareem is so convinced that he’s the answer to the question that it takes him a few seconds to realize he answered “Who is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar?” when the question was really “Who is Bill Walton?” Dude needs to learn his NBA history.source
