Politics: Rahm Emanuel pretending to listen to Chicago residents today

  • You are going to be asked some hardball questions and get your bat out. Welcome to Chicago.
  • Chicago resident Paul Johnson • Offering up some pretty necessary advice for our boy Rahm Emanuel, who’s working on his Chicago mayoral campaign as we speak. There are some residency issues that the Rahmster is currently trying to work out, and he’s in town as part of a campaign to shore up his lived-here-all-my-life credentials. “The Board of Elections will decide this, that’s the proper place,” Emanuel said. “So in the next five, six weeks, let’s have a debate about these issues that the residents of Chicago care about, not my residency.” Should be fun to see if it actually plays out that way. source

World: In Pakistan, drones reportedly kill German citizens with extremist ties

  • Do these guys have ties to the European terror threats? That’s our question. Generally, when the U.S. has drones go on the attack in Afghanistan or Pakistan, it takes a couple days to figure out exactly who got hit. This time, however, they knew very quickly. The drones nailed a group that included at least four people with German citizenship and reported extremist ties. Americans are keeping tight-lipped about any further details in the case, but the timing obviously leads to a lot of big questions. source

Politics: Dale Peterson: Officially the Ernest P. Worrell of Republican politics

  • So what if Dale Peterson didn’t win his primary for Alabama agriculture commissioner? He has a far more interesting gig. He’s taking his aw-shucks uber-Republican politics on the road to other states – this one, for the Georgia gubernatorial race, is designed in such a way that if it gets 100,000 views, it’ll get upgraded from YouTube to actually air on TV. It’s only halfway there after about a week and a half, but considering there’s a whole month until the election, he might just pull it off. Here’s another ad he did. After this, he should start selling milk.

Politics: Jon Stewart, Christine O’Donnell combined into one quote

  • They’ll think somehow that that will resonate with voters, that 20 years ago Christine O’Donnell on MTV said ‘Masturbation is a sin.’ And they’ll play it, and they’ll ridicule it, and the voters will be like, ‘Yeah, I don’t have a job.’ That’s how they’ll blow it.
  • Jon “I’ve been in the news a lot lately” Stewart • Making a key point about another person who’s been in the news a lot lately, Delaware Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell, during a NPR interview. We can’t find any fault in his warning to Democrats, really. In other Stewart news, the dude apparently got an apology from Rick Sanchez today. In other Christine O’Donnell news, she released her first full campaign ad today, and it’s very apologetic about her various weird statements in the ’90s. In other other Christine O’Donnell news, Bill Maher is really pissed that she hasn’t gone on his show. “It hurt me. It hurt me very deeply,” Maher said. “I don’t like it when people forget who they’re friends are, you know, who they started out with.” Oh, and there’s also this. Wait, that’s only from 2006! And it has nothing to do with the culture wars! source

Culture: Conan’s new promo: Take a drink from the hose, if you dare

  • Conan needs a desk, a gardening hose, and a crapload of water. That’s it. He doesn’t even need Andy Richter anymore. The hose is the new Andy Richter.

Politics: Despite enthusiasm gap, lots of Dems donating to re-election effort

  • $16 million raised by the Democratic National Committee in September
  • 2002 last time the DNC raised this much during the midterms source
  • » The DNC is in charge of re-electing Democrats. Although conventional wisdom says that Democrats are in big trouble this November, that hasn’t stopped them from pulling in record amounts of cash for their national re-election effort. Fun fact: 80% of the money came from low-dollar donors online and through the mail, as opposed to high-priced fund-raising dinners, George Soros, or anti-American communists intent on keeping Obama in power. The Republicans’ counterpart organization, the RNC, has not yet revealed its September totals.

Tech: “Social Network” criticism: Here comes the Facebook movie backlash

  • As one of the few journalists who’s interviewed Zuckerberg numerous times and is familiar with the history of Facebook’s early founding and continued growth, seeing the movie is a jarring, disorienting experience… The real Zuckerberg… has a much more varied personality.
  • Huffington Post reporter Jose Antonio Vargas • Regarding “The Social Network.” Well, no crap, buddy. Have you not been listening to Aaron Sorkin? He’s basically been saying that he made most of it up for weeks. And it’s fairly possible that you might have some bias anyway, due to the fact that you have exclusive access to Facebook. But we digress. He’s not the only reporter to say something to this effect: “The Facebook Effect” scribe David Kirkpatrick had this to say about the whole thing: “Even before Hollywood got involved… Facebook was the subject of quite a bit of lore — not all of it true,” he said. Which is pretty much how we feel about the matter. Sorkin wrote the Facebook tall tale, and it doesn’t matter whether or not it’s real. That tall tale, by the way, scored $23 million at the box office, and it’s also awards bait, so it may be with us for a while. source

  • causeSharon Angle, running for Senate under the banner of the Republican Party, was caught talking smack about the Republican Party…on tape!
  • effect?Given the strong anti-establishment sentiment this election cycle, will Angle’s antics hurt her candidacy? Might they actually help? source
