Politics: Max Headroom: Had enough Christine O’Donnell yet? Here’s more

  • We’re with Karl Rove While Rove has taken a lot of heat for his stance on Christine O’Donnell, the fact of the matter is that she has to deal with the many issues her campaign is bringing up. Also, Rove wants to get a GOP majority and he can’t do that with people not moving to the center.
  • Izzard > O’DonnellBill Maher’s happy ’cause had the incredible foresight to book O’Donnell dozens of times on “Politically Incorrect.” But the real winner here is “NaughtButEddie,” whose Eddie Izzard-focused clip was mentioned on “Real Time With Bill Maher” the other night.
  • Saget: Attentive listener You know, her time on “Politically Incorrect” is looking more and more like a liability on the surface, but at the same time, she’s smart and eloquent, even when you disagree with her on Leviticus. She had Bob “worst Aristocrats joke ever” Saget’s full attention.

Culture: Sacha Baron Cohen as Freddie Mercury: Why the heck not?

  • He needed another direction, so why not Freddie Mercury? Sacha Baron Cohen’s films – specifically “Borat” and “Bruno” are entertaining in a very painful way, but it’s the kind of amazing trick that only works for so long. First, people will figure out it’s you. Second, it’s the kind of joke that can get old very quick – comparing “Borat” to “Bruno” on Metacritic is a major hint that the joke fell flat. We like the idea of Cohen playing the Queen singer – he has no issues with playing flamboyant gay characters, wearing spandex, or with growing over-the-top mustaches. Plus, the director on deck, Peter Morgan, also directed “Frost/Nixon” and “The Last King of Scotland,” two rock-solid flicks from the last few years. Maybe this’ll be a great direction for him. source

Culture: Ben Affleck as director: It’s catching on, according to the box office

  • $20 million the amount Affleck’s acclaimed directorial debut, “Gone Baby Gone,” made in its entire run
  • $23 million the amount Affleck’s acclaimed follow-up, “The Town,” made just this weekend alone source
  • » What’s the difference? A few things could’ve caused it. First, Affleck is the star of “The Town,” whereas he didn’t show up in front of the camera at all during “Gone Baby Gone.” Second, “Baby” could’ve been a strong calling card for Affleck the director. Third, there was a more obvious studio push of “The Town,” which meant that people knew about it. That said, our money was totally on “Easy A” to win this weekend. Emma Stone killed in that movie.

Tech: Scientists claim to have found the “Homer Simpson gene” in mice

  • A big question this research raises is why would we, or mice, have a gene that makes us less smart – a Homer Simpson gene? I believe that we are not really seeing the full picture.
  • Emory University professor John Hepler, PhD • Regarding the research he’s done which shows that mice get smarter if you take a certain gene out of them. The RGS14 gene turns off a certain part of the brain, the CA2 region, and many scientists aren’t sure what it’s for. However, when they turned off the gene in mice, they suddenly had much stronger mental abilities. Neat. source
