Tech: Will Cheezburger Network’s Ben Huh tweeted Reddit offer work?

Condé Nast, I’m publicly offering to buy Reddit.: This was an email I sent to one of our sites, The Daily What: Hi… http://bit.ly/9keWv1Sat Aug 28 00:44:56 via twitterfeed

  • What happened? Reddit wanted to accept ads in favor of California’s pot-legalizing Prop. 19, which owner Condé Nast said was a big no-no. So they offered to run the ads for free.
  • A tweeted offer Not long after, Cheezburger Network CEO Ben Huh made an unsolicited offer to buy the business from Condé Nast. And he tweeted it. That’s postmodern.
  • Why that may be bad Ben Huh severely underpays his workers for work that requires a college education. We already covered it in detail. We don’t need to say anything else. source

Politics: DC bloggers to Glenn Beck rallygoers: Visit the freaking city!

  • Local Bloggers don’t really care about the rally. They see so many of them that they’re pretty much old hat at this point. In fact, sites like DCist or We Love DC didn’t even give tomorrow’s Glenn Beck rally a second notice until this hilarious guide hit the popular consciousness, starting on those blogs and eventually making its way onto Rachel Maddow’s show. They neutered it and turned it into a PR opportunity. (Smart move.) As a DC-based blog, we would like to point out a couple of things: One, we just saw a couple using the Metro tonight who blocked the aisle on the train with a couple of hunting-camo lawn chairs. Two, the nice thing about DC is that it’s a diverse city, so you might want to consider hitting U Street and checking out a show at The Black Cat. Trust us. source

Politics: Fidel Castro convinced Osama bin Laden is a U.S. spy

  • Who showed that he [Bin Laden] is indeed a CIA agent was WikiLeaks. It proved it with documents.
  • Former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro • Saying some crazy crap about Osama bin Laden, the CIA, George W. Bush and Wikileaks. We wish we could add more to this, but we simply can’t. It’s just too crazy. source

Tech: Patent troll: Paul Allen is a jerk who hasn’t been relevant in 20 years

  • Why do patents exist? Apparently so a multi-billionaire can choose to be a jerk and sue the entire Internet over obvious ideas he isn’t even using. Paul Allen, who’s giving away most of his fortune to charity anyway, is the head of Interval Licensing, which appears to be a patent-trolling firm based around patents that an old company of his, Interval Research Corp., created in the ’90s but never used. Now he’s suing Google, Facebook, eBay, Apple, Yahoo, Netflix and Youtube over what seem to be obvious patents. Our patent system is pretty much the worst thing ever, it’s being used to screw people over on obvious technologies, and it’s getting worse. If you really thought these patents were so bad, Paul, why did you choose not to sue Microsoft, which you own a stake in, or Amazon? source

U.S.: Want to block the government from tracking your car? Use this

  • Why you need this You’re a mad hax0r and you think some government duders are trying to track you because they put a GPS on your rig. Which now they can legally do thanks to a decision by the 9th District Appeals Court.

What this thang doesIt’s a signal jammer. It jams your GPS signal so said mad government jerks cannot attack you or your privacy. Or you’re a conspiracy theorist who thinks he’s being trailed by the government. Or you’re the Unabomber’s son. source

Politics: Is the NY Post complicit in recent anti-Muslim incidents?

  • There’s some perspective. There’s been a bit of disagreement with some about whether the NYC cabbie slasher was part of a larger trend of anti-Muslim hatred (see, he worked for a leftist pro-Islam organization), to which this Colbert clip does a good job of putting it into perspective. The New York Post is willing to call the alleged attacker a “disgrace” on its front page, but it’s also worth noting that they had weeks of anti-Muslim headlines before that. And well, there was another incident which could clearly be connected to the recent anti-Muslim vibe going around NYC. Is it possible that weeks of angry New York Post covers had nothing to do with either of these incidents? Sure. But let’s just say that they didn’t really help, either. source

Politics: Poll: Muslims like Obama more than anybody else

  • 78% of Muslims give Obama high approval
  • 63% of atheists and agnostics do the same
  • 24% of Mormons think he’s the bee’s knees source
  • » Most Christians are mixed: As Christian-based religions go, Mormons aren’t alone in their dislike of Obama; just half of Catholics approved of him and 43 percent of Protestants did. Jews were another group that greatly approved of Obama, with 61 percent giving him love. Other non-Christian religions largely approved of him too. Despite this, it’s worth noting that he’s down in every religious category listed, but none more than Mormons, where he’s fallen by 19 percent.

Politics: Glenn Beck rally will include baseball stars, Dr. King’s niece

  • I made it clear when we were approached: I said, ‘If it’s political, I wouldn’t even approach Albert with it.’ I don’t want to be there if it’s political.
  • St. Louis Cardinals Manager Tony La Russa • Totally misjudging the nature of Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” event on Saturday. He’ll be bringing his biggest star, Albert Pujols, with him. The baseball luminaries will be in D.C. on Saturday to play the Washington Nationals (who perhaps have the worst luck in the world right now), but will also be honored at the event. The event will also have a speech from Martin Luther King Jr.’s niece, Alveda King, which should be interesting to see. (Hint: She works at a conservative think-tank.) source
